Razzle Dazzle…and all that Jazz!

Last night, Pamela of Newport City Radio’s Curtain Call, Bryony, and I took our seats at the Dolman Theatre for an evening of razzle-dazzle, as Cross Keys College brought the iconic musical Chicago to life.

From the moment the lights dimmed, the production stepped confidently into the spotlight, embracing the show’s signature blend of sharp satire, sultry jazz, and dark humour. Chicago is no small undertaking, with its demanding choreography, tight ensemble work, and instantly recognisable score—and this talented cast rose to the challenge with admirable energy and commitment.

To say we were surprised by the quality of the acting, dancing and singing would be an understatement—it was, quite simply, wonderful. Across the board, the standard was impressively high, with a cast that delivered both individually and as a cohesive ensemble.
Standout performances came from Millie Edmunds as Roxie Hart, who brought both charm and attitude to the role, while James Shell as Billy Flynn commanded the stage with confidence and presence. The performer taking on Velma Kelly was equally impressive, delivering a confident, polished performance that perfectly captured the character’s sharp edge and stage presence. Lily Maria Szekely delivered a powerful and memorable Mama Morton, and Lloyd Screen added warmth and humour as Amos Hart. Ollie Tuck also impressed in the dual role of Mary Sunshine/Fred, showcasing versatility and strong character work.

Whilst Pamela and I were already familiar with both the stage show and the film version of Chicago, this was Bryony’s first experience—and she absolutely loved it. That fresh perspective said a lot; the production didn’t just satisfy expectations, it created new fans.

Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and a testament to the talent being nurtured at Coleg Gwent. We’re already excited to see future performances from these students. Congratulations must also go to the tutors and production team, whose hard work clearly shone through in every aspect of the show.
