Bastille Take the Castle

Cardiff Castle is easily one of the most spectacular settings for a summer gig. There is something incredibly special about standing inside those historic stone walls under the open sky, watching the evening light slowly disappear as thousands of people gather for live music. It’s the kind of venue that adds its own atmosphere before a band has even walked on stage, and Bastille certainly had the backdrop to match.

I’ll be honest from the outset: I’m by no means a superfan. Going into the evening, my knowledge of their discography was fairly casual, limited to their monumental breakout hit Pompeii, the early favourite Bad Blood, the Marshmello collaboration Happier, and the haunting track Eurydice they recently wrote for the prematurely cancelled Netflix series Kaos (seriously, bring it back!).

The Songs I Didn't Know I Needed

Dan Smith is a compelling frontman, striking a balance between understated charm and genuine enthusiasm. He spent plenty of time engaging with the Cardiff crowd without it ever feeling forced, and there was a relaxed confidence to the performance that suited the castle setting perfectly. The whole band looked like they were having fun, and that energy spread through the audience.

The biggest surprise of the night came in the form of a song I’d never heard before: When I Watch The World Burn All I Think About Is You. Tucked away on Doom Days, it completely caught me off guard. Hearing it live for the first time in an open-air venue transformed it into something genuinely breathtaking. The song builds beautifully, combining themes of modern uncertainty with an intimate emotional core, and Dan Smith’s vocals carried every moment. Even without the familiarity that comes from already loving a song, it instantly became my standout performance of the night. By the time it finished, I found myself wondering why it hadn’t crossed my radar years ago.

A Moment for a Legend

The band also offered Cardiff a glimpse of what’s next by performing a brand-new song, In the Light of the Morning. Introducing unreleased material can sometimes slow the pace of a concert, particularly when audiences are waiting for familiar favourites, but that never happened here. The new track felt warm, melodic and immediately accessible, earning an enthusiastic reception despite nobody in the crowd having had the chance to learn the words yet. It’s an encouraging sign that Bastille are still looking forwards rather than simply revisiting the past.

However, the most poignant moment of the evening did not come from their own catalog. In a beautiful nod to the host nation, the band paused the high-energy pop production to pay tribute to the late, great Welsh icon Bonnie Tyler, who had passed away earlier in the week. They launched into a short, unexpected cover of her legendary anthem Total Eclipse of the Heart.

The cheers that erupted when the crowd recognized those opening lines were absolutely deafening. Watching thousands of voices collectively carry that iconic chorus against the ancient, illuminated stone walls was an unforgettable, spine-tingling moment of shared love.

The Song That Built an Empire

Of course, no Bastille concert would be complete without Pompeii, and the closing performance didn’t disappoint. From the opening chant, the atmosphere inside Cardiff Castle shifted up another level as thousands of voices joined together. Even as someone who only knew a handful of songs before arriving, it was impossible not to get swept up in the collective energy. The historic walls echoed back every chorus, creating one of those moments that simply wouldn’t feel the same anywhere else.

By the end of the evening, it didn’t matter that I hadn’t recognised every song or known every lyric. Bastille proved they’re far more than a band living off one defining hit. They delivered a thoughtful, unpredictable and thoroughly entertaining live show that rewarded both dedicated fans and newcomers alike. I arrived expecting to tick Pompeii off my concert bucket list; I left with a newfound appreciation for just how much more the band has to offer.
