Today Kym was joined by Right Keys Only for a talk about anything and everything

Being over a year since she last came onto the show, a lot has changed and happened. The biggest of all being her award.

The Youth Music awards, hosted by Youth Music, happened earlier this month. The award in particular in which Keys was nominated for and won was the Rising Star award. She won the award for her work in supporting disabled music industry workers: one of which was an accessible open mic night. She told us about the speech she gave after winning the award about being a disabled artist, so many people came up to her thanking her for speaking out and how some spaces are very encouraging for people to talk about being disabled and others tell them to keep quiet.

As usual, we kicked off the show with one of Key’s songs. The first we took a listen to was “Make It Better”, this track being from Keys Collective in particular. Despite Keys Collective not being as active anymore, they still work together on music. She gave us some insight into the song: She sat in a studio with a producer when he said she usually sings more sad and negative topics. After some back and forth, she decided to make a dance track that calls out the listener for dancing along, having fun while so many bad things are still happening in the world.

After hearing some of her work, Kym asked Keys about the process of songwriting. She answered that ideas for songs and topics to write about often come from everywhere. Just seeing something slightly interesting on the street could spark an idea. Keys added she has a section on her notes app on her phone full of voice memos, various thoughts and anything that has the potential to be used in a song. Even random stories she comes across online can be the inspiration for the next track: which is exactly what happened with her next single “Ghost”.

On the 31st of October, Halloween night, we’ll get to hear the next Right Only Keys song, Ghost. As song ideas can come from almost anywhere for Keys, the concept for Ghost came from a real story of a woman who married a Ghost. What comes after reading such a story? A techno track.

Behind the scenes, bigger things are taking shape. Keys is working on an EP which (if all goes to plan) should release next year. She told Kym that the EP is being made with multiple musicians from across the UK and that it all happened so far and became a big thing. While we know nothing so far, we’re looking forward to the plethora of new music!

Finally, what’s next:

With the release of Ghost, Keys will also be releasing a short horror series online based around the song. The best place you can find her music and any other projects is online, Instagram in particular under the name ‘rightkeysonly’.
