Nelson in Love

Marcus had never been so excited about a school trip. The whole class was off to the Natural History Museum. There would be dinosaur bones, space rocks… and maybe, just maybe, a pirate exhibit.

He packed his essentials: snacks, juice, and his trusty eye patch. “Sorry, Nelson,” he said, placing the patch over his cheeky glass eye. “You can’t spook the fossils.”

Nelson gave a tiny, offended wiggle.

“Behave,” Marcus warned. “You’re a glass eye, not a tour guide.”

But the moment they stepped into the museum, Nelson started twitching again.

“Stop it,” Marcus muttered. “Don’t you dare.”

Then Marcus saw her.

A girl with chestnut brown hair, a blue cap, and the brightest yellow backpack he’d ever seen. She smiled… but it wasn’t her smile that caught Nelson’s attention. It was her eye. Or rather, her glass eye. Pale blue and polished to perfection.

“She’s got a glass eye too!” Marcus whispered.

Before he could react, ping! — Nelson launched himself out from under the eye patch and rolled straight across the polished floor.

“Excuse me,” the girl said, scooping him up. “Is this yours?”

“Er… yes,” Marcus said, mortified. “Sorry. He does that.”

“I’m Lucy,” the girl grinned. “And this is Iris.” She tapped her own eye gently.

Nelson blinked. Iris blinked. If glass eyes could swoon, Nelson definitely did.

“Looks like they like each other,” Lucy giggled.

“I think Nelson’s in love,” Marcus muttered.

They explored the exhibits together — Marcus, Lucy, Nelson, and Iris: dinosaurs, volcanoes, even a giant moon rock. At lunch, Nelson sat beside Iris in the sandwich box.

When the trip ended, Marcus waved goodbye. “See you at school?”

Lucy nodded. “I think Iris would like that.”

Nelson shimmered with glee.

He keeps the crew here, entertained with true tales about a life with Nelson the naughty eye and has agreed to share some of them as children’s stories.
