nticipation is rising as Newport awaits what could be the city’s best creative event of the season. On the 28th October, Maindee Library is hosting a photo marathon. Details of the event have been seeping out over the past few weeks but with pre-registration already open we’re eager to know more. Especially as only 200 registrations are being taken for the event.
If showing off your talents at the village fayre isn’t your style then this could be the event you’ve been waiting for. The Newport Photomarathon is set to be a creative, urban adventure.
The origins of photomarathons can be traced back to Spain in the early eighties. However, in recent years they have grown in popularity around the world. They are timed photography challenges, where participants are given twenty-four hours to capture images on set themes.
Although winning is the ultimate goal, photo marathons are a great way to meet new people, make friends and explore your local area. The Newport event is also offering a range of workshops where professional photographers will help you hone your skills, although spaces for these are limited.
At the end of the competition all entries will go on display in a free public exhibition; making it an excellent opportunity to get your photography seen.
This week the Photomarathon team released further details on the event. We now know that there will be an entrance fee of £5. However, they are offering discounted entry to individuals who are unemployed or have refugee status; a great sign that this is going to be an inclusive event.
There has been confirmation that photos can be taken on mobile phones or cameras, so there is no need to have access to expensive equipment. You can find some great online tutorials on getting the most from a phone camera which will help you brush up your skills before the big day.
According to details on the website, a public exhibition of all images will take place two weeks after the event. Winning photos will be chosen by the judges for each category and there will be prizes on offer. The winning images will then be involved in a longer standing exhibition.
