er career began in the year 2003 when she produced a series of demo tapes. She was eventually signed by a massive/successful record label called DefJam Recordings who specialise in Hip Hop and urban music. "Who is this?" I hear you ask. This is Barbadian superstar: Rihanna. Let's find out about her music, her biggest hits, my personal top five faves and what I genuinely like about the artist.
Born on February 20 1988, Rihanna rose to fame in 2005, when she released her debut single ‘Pon De Replay’ which was followed by her debut album ‘Music Of The Sun’. The next song which followed on afterwards was 'If Its Lovin' That You Want'. This was the second and final song from her first album.
Rihanna’s three biggest hits were:
Umbrella – In 2007, this song reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, on digital sales alone. By the end of 2008, this single had sold over 600,000 copies, making it her biggest selling single of all time. This featured on her album ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ and featured Jay-Z.
We Found Love (features Calvin Harris) – In 2011, this single reached number one and sold 87,000 copies on the UK Singles Chart, the UK Dance Chart and UK Singles Downloads Chart. The song was featured on Rihanna’s album ‘Talk That Talk’.
Work (features Drake) – On the 27th January 2016, Rihanna released this song from her album ‘Anti’. This debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart and debuted at number one on the UK R&B Chart.
What I admire about Rihanna is that she’s not afraid to be herself and she owns whatever style she wears. She’s quite adventurous, especially with her choice of the colour she has had her hair over the years and not forgetting her choice of outfits. I really love how she’s very down to earth and how humbled she is to be from a small Barbadian community, where she helps out in a big way. This allows her to show how grateful she is by returning the favour to the people who have helped her on her journey. I also love how she’s very charitable and how she always makes the time for her loyal fans; the Navys, the name originates from her role in the 2012 science fiction film Battleship.
My Top 5
Pon De Replay
I really like this song because this is her first single and it puts her on the map as a future star. I like her style in this video as its quite quirky and cool. I really like her vocals in this too, I feel like its got a really good beat and it gets everyone up on the dancefloor.
Umbrella (features Jay-Z)
I like this song because its got a different vibe to what her first single had. Its more R&B than dancehall. Like a fine wine she's matured in style and how she writes her songs has also changed over the years. I like also Jay-Z's involvement in it too.
Where Have You Been
I like this song because Rihanna has really good vocals in this. I feel like her dance moves are really good in the video.
Work featuring Drake
I love her song ‘Work’ because it’s got a dancehall - style vibe to it and I love how she’s put her Barbadian roots into the lyrics “he said me haffi work, work, work.. “. And I love how she works with Drake (who features in the song) not forgetting how their vocals just go smoothly together.
If It’s Lovin’ That You Want
I really love this song because it remiinds me of when I used to be a belly dancer in a troupe. The beat is really fresh and unique. I like how she makes the song personal to her by incorporating her Barbadian roots into the song. She just shows how proud she is of her origins, where she's come from and where she's going in life. A great role model for those from any kind of background, whether it be disadvantaged or fortunate.
So there you have it. The prominent career of Rihanna. Her career has lasted a whole 10 years. And she’s still bringing out new music to this day. I love Rihanna, as I’m sure you’ve gathered. But I’d like to know what you think of her and what is your favourite song of hers?
