ello and welcome back to another edition of my ever-growing musical series, Dani’s Music Box. The music that has influenced me and/or inspired me in some way will feature in this series, along with some awesome bands who should be featured just because.
Last time I was in London, England, with a band I’d love to reform, however, this time I’ve taken to the skies and landed myself in St. Louis, Missouri.
This is where the band I’m talking about today is from and that band were originally called Big Blue Monkey, until they changed their name. Can you guess who yet? The band I’m going to be talking about is Story of the Year.
I grew up with this band as they started releasing music when I had my second attempt at college. Crosskeys was the place to be as everyone liked different styles of music, mostly heavy which I liked. Two weeks into the college year – and nine days before my 19th birthday – Story of the Year released their debut album, Page Avenue (2003). This album was shared around the college during the 2003-2004 year. I remember because I made numerous copies for people although now I do have a legit copy.
Two years later and they released their second album, In the Wake of Determination (2005). I was back at college but I was less happy as my tutor had intentionally given me false information about my exams, I hadn’t done them and I’d found out that I could have.
Anyway, this album became one of the albums – mainly due to its title, some album tracks also perhaps – that helped me throughout the rest of my life, because where I’d been told what to do and how to do things since a young age, or my life had been dictated to me, by this point I was fed up of being told I wasn’t good enough and couldn’t do anything so I became determined to prove everyone wrong.
They released their third album, The Black Swan (2008) a few years later, by which time I was at university trying to work by myself and cultivate a new project. Nothing materialized for two years but those two years were spent in various other projects that I wanted to come to an end so I could focus on just one.
In 2010, The Constant, Story of the Year’s fourth effort was released. This was the year I decided to try and get happy again. I’d gone through a bad patch for the previous three years, I’d also walked away from music for that long too. I tried to reform an old band but that never happened, so instead of getting depressed, I turned it into a positive and formed a solo project which is now a band project.
Songs from The Constant helped me to carry on and not quit. Listening back to In the Wake of Determination also made me see and realise that there would be no point to anything I’d done if I had quit, walked away and not returned, but thanks to my connection with people through music, I’m more determined than ever to succeed.
Wolves is the fifth studio album by Story of the Year, to be released some time during 2017 butt the date is yet to be confirmed, so I’m waiting for that album to drop and I’m also anticipating a tour. Here’s to hoping.
