ello and welcome to another edition of my musical series, with another new band to talk about. Despite talking about one band I’ll need to go back to the 90s, where the genre I’ll be discussing became prominent.
Korn pioneered the genre Nu Metal back in 1993 with the release of their demo album, Niedermeyer’s Mind. The sound was horrendous, different and new unlike anything I’d heard before and very discordant… I fell in love as this was my kind of happy.
Less than 10 years later and another I fell in love with, Linkin Park, released an updated version of Nu Metal, revamped for the new decade and new millennium. Well just over 10 years later, we can now look forward to and enjoy the future of Nu Metal with one of my favourite new bands, Ocean Grove.
The band formed in 2010 and are named after the suburb that they’re from. I also decided to go back to music and for my solo project back in 2010. I wanted to take my time with it as I was the only member.
Three years later, they self-released their debut EP, Outsider (2013). I didn’t know of this band unfortunately until this year, but I wish I’d been informed of their existence before now, because they’re damn good. So, while they were starting to release music, I was starting to collate songs to record. I was way behind.
By 2015, I was volunteering with Newport City Radio, where my solo project begun to flourish, as it technically became a band project. Also in 2015, Ocean Grove released a second EP, Black Label, re-released as Black Label (Sublime Vol.) in 2016. This was also the year I started doing a radio show of the same name as this blog series – Dani’s Music Box.
In February 2017, my band became official and went through a line-up change, and we are currently rehearsing, recording and producing our own music so watch this space. I also came across Ocean Grove while looking for new music to promote for my new music show every Friday. The song I’d chosen was, ‘Thunderdome,’ taken from their debut 2017 album, The Rhapsody Tapes. I first heard the song and I fell in love with the band. I just wanted the presenters on the Rock/Metal Show to hear and appreciate how good the band are – to which I think I achieved that with great success.
As a show, we went to London in search of greatness. We found it. It wasn’t in a ‘live’ capacity, however, they were reeling having just finished the gig, so we decided to talk to them and meet them. It’s a good thing we did because they’re not just an awesome band but they’re awesome people to boot. They mention they’re coming back to the UK, so even though we missed them, we’re now going back to see them this time round – I seem to be the only one thus far who has book a ticket! Yes, they posted on Instagram two weeks ago that they’re doing a European tour with Northlane and I’m that excited I can’t think of anything better than to finally see them live.
This is it for now kids, but if any of you ever get the chance to see Ocean Grove live, without hesitation, I suggest you go and see them and I’ll do for you what I did for me. This was my introduction to this band so this will be yours. I hope you enjoy it. Until next time.
