elcome to my new music series here on Newport City Radio. Each month, I will be sharing my favourite tunes that I have been digging during that month!
Nancy Mulligan – Ed Sheeran
Let’s get the ginger genius out of the way. It is inevitable for me (and many other Sheeran fans I’m sure) that Ed Sheeran has been a big part of March this year, with the release of ÷. I could have easily included the whole album in this list, but I’m not going to go into that again when there’s a perfectly good blog post about it on here where I geek out over it. if you want to know more about Sheeran’s new album go give it a read.
One of my favourites from the album is ‘Nancy Mulligan’ and I have been listening to it non-stop this month. It is sweet, quintessentially Irish and I just love it; much better than ‘Galway Girl’!
Hair – Lady Gaga
I go through phases with Lady Gaga. However, this song has been very inspiring to me recently. It’s a song about freedom. It sends a message that life can be so hard at times, but you are in control and nothing can stop you. You are as free as your hair.
As someone who dyes their hair a LOT, I really resonate with this song and this month I have been constantly listening to it whenever it comes up in my shuffle. It has inspired me so much lately that I even chopped and restyled some of my hair! My motto in life is: when things get hard, do weird stuff to your hair! This song ties in perfectly with that.
Shout Out to My Ex – Little Mix
I’m not usually one for mainstream pop, but this song has really gotten under my skin and I have been loving it so much this month. As someone who has been through a bad break up (as so many people have) this song is that perfect 'I don’t care', 'I’m moving on', 'your loss” song.
I just can’t help but mime the hell out of this track and bop along, no matter where I am.
Scared of the Dark – Steps
I have been a Steps fan since I was little – with my Disney French fan, pretending that I was in the music video for ‘It’s the Way You Make Me Feel’. So, when Steps realised their brand new single this month, I was all over it! This song is so similar to their original material from the 90s, but it also has a new, modern feel to it which I have been obsessed with.
If you like Steps as much as I do, then I have written a Steps blog post, where I talk about the new single, album and tour as well as exploring the band’s past. (Sorry for the shameless plug there.)
24K Magic – Bruno Mars
Finally, we have ‘24K Magic’. This song has been a grower for me, ever since it was released. But this month, I have found myself digging it even more! With the mix of keyboards, synths and electronic vocals, as well as the heavy thumping bass throughout, I can’t help but bop along every single time it comes up on my shuffle.
I’m not usually a fan of Bruno Mars’ music, but this song has me hooked. I also quite like his latest single ‘That’s What I Like’, but it is not a favourite... Yet!
