So in 1996, Nightwish had formed and during her time with the band, Turunen had released five albums. 10 years later, she released her first solo album, Henkäys Ikuisuudesta (2006), a Christmas album of covers. At the time, I was doing my A Levels in my second college, Ystrad Mynach and didn’t know about this album until a few years later.
In 2007, I started working at Varsity in Cardiff, studied for my final year of my A Levels and became excited to learn that Turunen was now making music as a solo artist. During this year, her sophmore album My Winter Storm (2007) was released. I was sold from the music videos the album spawned, ‘I Walk Alone,’ ‘Die Alive’ and ‘Enough’ respectively, as her style of music was akin to Nightwish.
A few years later, I decided to quit university as the course I’d chosen to study, didn’t turn out to be what was originally advertised. That same year elsewhere in the world, Turunen had released her third album, What Lies Beneath (2010). Around this time, I discussed with a friend of mine, Andre, how epic it would be to see Turunen collaborate with Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation on a song. It was cool idea we thought, but soon our prayers would be answered.
Colours in the Dark (2013), Turunen’s fourth album, featured a cover of Peter Gabirel’s ‘Darkness’ which I feel is one of the best covers of the song I’ve heard, alongside Nena’s version. At the end of the year, Within Temptation released their first single, ‘Paradise (What About Us?)’ featuring Turunen, from their sixth studio album, Hydra (2014). Our prayers certainly were answered and the song is absolutely amazing.
Her latest offering, The Shadow Self (2016) is sheer greatness. Turunen is so very talented and has a beautiful personality to match. I wanted to see Nightwish live when she was a part of the band, however, last month I got to see Turunen in London finally all these years later at Koko, being supported by My Own Ghost who I thought at first were the sound technicians. The support band were also amazing.
That’s it for now, next time we’re travelling to the United States for a bit so see you soon.
