here is something quite surreal about the moment you first see yourself on a billboard. If anything is a motivator to get fit and lose weight, it has got to be seeing yourself several feet high and plastered on the side of a leisure centre.
I’m a couple of weeks into my EVERYbody journey with Newport Live. I’ve completed my induction, had a personalised fitness plan drawn up and seen my own face too many times to mention.
Going to my gym induction took some self-motivation. Having never been to a gym in my adult years, the experience was quite daunting. I must admit I considered ringing in sick, but I made it through the door.
One of the gym coaches showed me how to safely use each piece of equipment and programme the settings. I was booking in for my fitness plan two days later.
Thursday arrived and I had an appointment to design a fitness plan suited to my lifestyle. During the session, we discussed my goals and current fitness level, as well as any injuries that may impact my training. The coach then walked me through my gym workout so that I knew what to do next session.
In this first session, I was surprised by how much I could do. Maybe I am more active than I thought? Or maybe it’s because most of the machines were only on level 2…
Tuesday rolled around and it was time to face the gym all by myself. I did the school run, dropped my youngest off at pre-school and headed for the gym. I picked up my exercise plan and headed straight for the treadmill.
Before joining the EVERYbody campaign I was concerned about having enough time to utilise my membership. On each visit I would only have between 45 minutes and an hour available. However, so far this doesn’t seem to be an issue. I explained to the coach my time limitations and the plan devised, for me, takes around 45 minutes to complete.
I walked into the gym confident that I knew where to go and how to use the machines. Having the exercise plan written out clearly helped boost my confidence in the first few visits. I did forget how to programme the rowing machine – but one of the coaches was happy to show me, for the third time, how to use it.
My children have been very supportive and excited about mummy going to the gym. They also find it hilarious that mummy is on posters and on Facebook. However, an unexpected bonus to my membership has been the ability to take my three year old swimming for free!
As part of the Newport Live membership I get access to the pool, and it turns out that under 5’s are entitled to free swimming. How did I not know this already!? So, a bonus to my membership is that every week I can now take both the children swimming individually and it only costs £1.75 a week.
I am also able to book courts for racket sports, which means I can take the family to play tennis or badminton each weekend at no extra cost. I picked up a cheap set of rackets on Amazon and booked a court online. Watch out Newport Centre!
The best song on in the gym this week has had to be this one:
I’m only two weeks into my journey, so I’m still riding a wave of enthusiasm, however I’ve attended the gym three times each week and been swimming with the children. I don’t quite have the confidence yet for a class, but hope to look into these in the not too distant future. With the sheer number of classes available, there has got to be something to suit me.
I was surprised that the EVERYbody mantra is actually true in Newport Centre. There are people there of all different ages, sizes and fitness levels. It is for everybody. I do still feel slightly out of place going down to the weights area, but I am pushing through the awkwardness.
Weekday mornings are perfect for me as the gym is relaxed and quiet, but as I work part time this isn’t always an option. On Friday evenings the gym appears particularly well stocked with weight lifting men, while I toddle along with my 10kg reps. But never mind, this journey is all about me.
So far I am loving the experience and thank Newport Live for the opportunity to be a part of the campaign. I would never have signed up for a gym membership without this.
Check back soon to find out whether my motivation continues.
