As the festive season begins, most of us are looking forward to spending time with family and friends, cosying up by the Christmas tree and exchanging presents. It is the season of excess, however across Newport, hundreds of people will be homeless this Christmas.
On the streets, in shelters, or in emergency accommodation; homelessness is a big problem across the UK. Take some time this Christmas to think about those in need.
1 Step at a Time are a Newport based charity who aim to help homeless people create a positive future. They provide basic living essentials to the people who need it most, including those moving into homes.
On the 17th December, volunteers at 1 Step at a Time will be hitting the streets to deliver a Christmas dinner to individuals who find themselves on the streets during the festive period.
The team at the charity constantly strive to support and empower people within our local community. This Christmas time, you can join them in doing something; you can make a difference to the lives of those in need.
1 Step at a Time have put together a list of key items they need to be donated to enable them to continue their work. The list includes:
· Thick socks
· Men’s boxer shorts
· Ladies’ underwear
· Selection boxes
These items can be purchased cheaply in major retailers across Newport, or you may even have some unused gift sets at the back of the cupboard. Whatever you can give, these small items can make a massive difference to people’s lives.
Donations can be dropped off at Faith Church in Rogerstone, NP10 9FQ. From there they will be given out to those most in need. Your donations could be the only gift someone gets this Christmas.
