At Tredegar House, the bad weather meant that some of the planned activities had to be moved into a barn and stable block, but that didn’t spoil the fun at all.
Newport City Radio presenters joined the children as they learned how to make kites, grow their own vegetables and herbs, build a bird house, cook over a camp fire, dip for bugs in pond water and many other fun and educational projects.
There were a variety of animals to pet such as loveable goats, a tiny, cheeky pony, a friendly sheep and a pair of shy hedgehogs.
I was at the event on Saturday, when one of the most popular activities was snail racing. Children, their mums, and dads and our DJ’s, took turns to lure competing snails across the finishing line with the snails’ favourite edible leaves.
The snail called Slimy was the champion of the day!
Many of the children who attended “50 things to do before your 11 and 3/4” kindly agreed to talk to the NCR team about the activities they had taken part in.
I met Seb, Seren, MacKenzie, Finlay, Lily, Carys, James, Millie, Callum and Carrie-Mae on Saturday.
The children all demonstrated the stylish kites they had made and proudly showed us the cookies they had decorated and the wild art they had created.
Most of the children seemed to agree that cooking marshmallows over a campfire and snail racing were the most fun.
It was a fantastic day for kids, parents and the Staff of Newport City Radio!
