“I would say Southend and Burton are definitely two of the strongest teams we’ve played this season and it’s going to be very even between them,” the County boss told the Southend Echo.
“I don’t think there is going to be much in it at all, maybe the odd goal but I think Southend might just edge it. Southend’s midfield three are the best in the league and Ryan Leonard has always been excellent whenever I’ve seen him. I really don’t understand why he wasn’t in the PFA team of the year.”
The County boss also admitted that Burton have the players to hurt Southend and singled out their top goalscorer, Billy Kee, as the main danger.
“Kee is an intelligent player as he drops back into positions where people are not sure if they should follow him,” said Edinburgh. “Burton also have good wingers and that’s going to be a very important battle because Southend’s full-backs like to try and get forward, especially Ben Coker.
“You have to make sure the players play the game and not the occasion. I was watching the Conference semi-final between Grimsby and Gateshead the other day and Grimsby had two players sent off.
Ryan Leonard has always been excellent whenever I’ve seen him. I really don’t understand why he wasn’t in the PFA team of the year.
“You just can’t afford for that to happen and you have to make sure the players stick to the game plan.”
The winner of the Southend vs Burton tie will play the winner of Fleetwood vs York City (where Fleetwood currently lead 1-0) in the playoff-final for a spot in League One next season.
Do you think County could be in the mix for a playoff spot like these sides come this time next season?
