owards the end of 2017, Newport Live launched their EVERYbody campaign. This new campaign aimed to champion individual journeys and goals, whether that be weight loss, fitness, or sporting goals. To launch the campaign Newport Live gave the opportunity for local people to win a three month membership to Newport Live.
Having seen my own fitness declining over the years, I took the opportunity to enter the competition, and in late December I received the news that I had been selected as one of five winners. You can find out more about the other winners via the Newport Live website or social media pages. They represent the wide cross-section of people that train with Newport Live.
This membership will give me all the benefits of a full membership, including unlimited access to Newport Live gyms, group exercise classes, public swimming sessions and racquet sports. Also included are orientations, bespoke training programmes, health checks and regular reviews.
Now, joining a gym in January is not unusual, but it is for me. I haven't set foot in a gym since I was in school, where the exercise room provided a valid excuse to skip PE sessions. I own a treadmill and an exercise bike, however, these are little more than elaborate coat stands which clutter up my hallway. I have always believed the stereotype, where gyms are full of the skinny and the super fit - no one wants to be the least fit person in the gym.
My motivation for applying for the EVERYbody campaign was to improve my fitness so I can keep up with my lively young children. It is easy to slip into a comfortable routine and the thought of joining a gym gets pushed to the back of the agenda. For me, a busy lifestyle has meant my own fitness has never been a priority. I am hoping my gym trial will change this mindset.
Join me over the next three months on my journey from unfit and overweight, to... well, let's wait and see.
