Today really did show that Mercedes are the team to catch in 2014. With Nico Rosberg also finishing 2nd, it gave Mercedes their first 1-2 finish since 1955 and the days of Fangio and Moss!
Red bull showed glimpses of their improvement with a 3rd place finish for Sebastian Vettel, but things went horribly wrong for Daniel Ricciardo after a front wing failure damaged one of his front tyres forcing him to pit, and was then penalised for an unsafe release with a loose front tyre.
After being pushed back up the pit lane, and having the tyre secured, he as then given a 10-second stop go penalty. All in all, this destroyed his race.
I was impressed with the performance of Nico Hulkenberg for Force India who put in a very good performance, keeping pace with the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso and finishing an impressive 5th.
With his team mate Sergio Perez not even making the start with a hydraulic problem, Hulkenberg made up for that with a good points paying finish. The Williams cars of Massa and Bottas also put in a good performance, and are already vastly improved in 2014.
With the threat of rain never materialising, Lewis Hamilton was completely untroubled up front, however Rosberg leads the Championship after two races. Could this be the start of a Senna v Prost style rivalry?! Watch this space!
