Record Store Day returns on 22nd April 2017 and Newport City Radio are getting involved, of course!
Record Store Day is a day where we can celebrate record stores and the music that they sell. in 2007, at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US, and thousands of similar stores internationally.
The first Record Store Day took place on 19th April, 2008. Today, there are participating stores on every continent, except Antarctica. At Newport City Radio, not only are we getting involved, but we want you to get involved too! A guitar signed by the Manic Street Preachers will be raffled at Diverse Music in the city centre on the day, and you could win it! Not only that, but the day will be filled of live music and a fundraiser for Velindre Cancer Centre, contributing to invaluable specialist cancer services in South-East Wales. Tickets for the guitar raffle are available from Diverse Music.
Funds raised from the guitar raffle will go to Velindre Cancer Centre, a specialist cancer treatment centre located on the perimeter of Cardiff. They provide services to over 1.5 million people across South-East Wales and beyond. Each year, they treat over 5,000 new referrals and around 50,000 new outpatients.
Their dedicated staff of over 670 work as a close knit team, providing patients and families with the best possible care and treatment. In the city centre, there will be a free live stage at the junction of Charles St. and Commercial street with performances from Dan Bettridge, Jodie Marie, Parcs, Ofelia, Joe Kelly and Vince James performing outside just a few metres from Diverse Music record store.
Over at the Riverfront, there will be a concert with performances from VANT, Hannah Grace, CwCw, Clarity, Monico Blond, with more guests to be announced. DJs including Alex Postle and Graham Taylor from Goldie Lookin’ Chain will play free in the Theatre foyer, with further special guest DJs to be announced. Newport City Radio have been involved with Record Store Day for the past 4 years.
Last year, we put on a show at 3 different locations. The Ivy Bush, Newport Market and a big finale in Slippin’ Jimmy’s. This year at Newport City Radio, we will be filling all our radio shows with live performers and, since it is such a special occasion, we will be doing shows live throughout the night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.
