even weeks ago, I had a simple question. What could our team of 50 volunteers do in the next 2 years with the tools we have to improve Newport City Radio? This lead to more questions… How could we make the music that we play when a presenter isn’t in the chair, better? How could we improve the quality of our writing for our blogs?
What content seemed relevant and how could we order more? All things I tend to do on a week off work.
I wasn’t expecting this!
Welcome to a better mix of music for our City!
Welcome to the new look, smarter, intelligent newportcityradio.org…
Us Newportonians love music. We have a great choice of radio stations. How does online based Newport City Radio fit in to this? We set up a poll on the website asking for you to vote on your favourite genre of music. We asked friends and family for their opinions. A sub team, led by Jade, Dale, Shane Adam and Krissie tasked to listen to lots of radio to see what was being played by the big boys. Our Programme Director, Philip Davies and I considered the fastest growing broadcast stations in the country to see if we could find a trend… or at least a hole in the market.
Bradley, who was researching the music for my Music and memories of a Newport DJ blogs provided an additional base for our plan.
The result was a very pleasant surprise.
In 2008 we created the slogan, Indie, Dance, Urban and everything inbetween. It appears that this is still hugely relevant. Outside of live presenter shows, nonstop Newport City Radio will have a great mix of music from indie acts like Oasis, Kings of Leon and Welsh legends Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers and Catatonia. Expect to hear acts like David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Pitbull, and M People in the dance category. Representing urban will be Rihanna, Usher, Destiny’s Child and Ne-yo. Finally, the ‘inbetween’ will be mainly reggae with singers including Sean Paul, Shaggy, Vybz Kartel and Beenie Man.
It’s work in progress but so for listener tests have been positive, please let me know what you think on facebook and twitter. Expect a few gems that you haven’t heard for ages!
Next… what about our amazing team of bloggers (or writers if you like). Already producing at least 2 fresh blogs a day with a team of editors working to make them look pretty on our website what could we do next. Our Dani and Vicky were given free rein to delve deep into our stats to see what you like reading the most and come up with a few distinct categories. Then Newport City Radio does what Newport City Radio does best. Gives me the right volunteer at the right time. Coral (initially reluctantly) joined the team. As a former university lecturer who was used to giving positive feedback we were now able to support our bloggers like never before. After all we are supposed to be a confidence and skills building project!
Expect blogs about news and sport in city, nationally and internationally. Expect more written content about or amazing a radio shows like Kyms ‘Knowing me, knowing you’ series, an evolution of her ‘Story behind the song for our key genres of Indie, Dance, Urban and Reggae, and more ‘Radio notes’ like our Gareth’s. In our culture section we’ll have more spicy short stories from our fabulously name Xania and Nathan. We’ve just learn that our resident poet Zam Zam is leaving us. Thank you for everything you’ve done my friend. Adam will also be looking at cool historical stories.
In our music section my DJ life story will continue through the summer. Expect twists, turns and epic tunes. Shannon and Nathan with be creating blogs as Indie goes to war with Dance, Dance takes on Urban and Reggae clobbers them all… maybe. It’s going to be monthly battle till the end of time!
Talking of time, Our new resident Doctor who expert, Terry will be across the whole of series ten in our film and tv section. We’re also launching a Doctor a day fortnight to celebrate our fascination with all things Gallifrey. Leanne will be soon finishing season 2 of ‘Shadowhunters’. Roll on season 3. We’ll all be pitching in with reviews of the biggest films and their trailers.
Ok, we get it. You love gaming, so please have some more. Denise will continue to ignite old memories with her ‘Retrospective’ series. We’ll also be across all the tech news at this years E3 event. It appears that we’re mainly all geeks at Newport City Radio.
Then the biggest thing happened.
Our website is our home and the base from which our social media leads from. Our website hosts our radio shows, the events play music at and the blogs that our volunteers write.
Our website designer, Adam (yes another Adam… we have three) decided to ‘tidy up’ our website. Philip and I know what this means. Newport City Radio is about to be served noticed by this one individual. All hands are required as about three years of project development are about to happen in hyper speed. In this case seven weeks.
Adam is about to pledge to build the best radio website in the UK!
The whole point of the new website is to put the radio back at the forefront of what we do. The content written by our volunteers is intended to be dynamic. Each section of the website will have its own polls for people to vote on, and their own individual “Did you know” facts. This will change every time the site is refreshed. The new site has also been optimised to load faster, the mobile and tablet editions have also been refreshed.
For me to have a HUGE play button (a clever twist on our logo) top and centre, showcasing all the songs we’re playing, just played or about to play makes me smile. Each show is also centre stage as we show you what we’re about and what we can do.
I’m also pleased to see ‘Your Voice’ return. This is where you can upload blogs, news about events or anything Newport without being a volunteer. Of course, you’re still welcome to join our epic team.
Finally there’s the ‘Big Story’. Updated regularly, apparently by me, we’ll let you know what’s trending globally, but also what’s happening in Newport and what’s happening with us. Its gonna be a challenge but I willingly accept.
Before I hand it over to you, the people of Newport, the rightful owners of Newport City Radio I need to say thank you to the whole team. It’s been a constant stream of facebook messages between Adam, Philip and myself, all hours of the day for almost two months. We’ve pulled together as never before and roped in friends and family to help. Its felt that my team of 50 volunteers has doubled. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Here’s to NEWport City Radio. Playing Indie, Dance, Urban (Reggae) and everything inbetween. providing you with fresh content every time you refresh.
I’ll be back soon to tell you more about our next set of crazy plans… Including a song contest and a music awards ceremony!
