ou might not be familiar with the name of this week’s featured song writer but you will definitely know many of his songs.
Max Martin’s real name is Max Sandberg. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1971 and was a student of Sweden’s public music education programme. The programme taught him much of what he needed to know for a career in music which started when he joined a glam-metal band as frontman & singer when he was 14. The band, It’s Alive enjoyed mediocre success but it was Martin’s talent for song writing that really caught the attention of Denniz PoP, the record label owner/producer/DJ. Together they began collaborating on new material.
Denniz PoP gave his protégé the name Max Martin, hiring him to work in his Chieron Studios where Martin learned the basics of record producing.
Following his mentor’s death in 1998, Martin took over as director of Cheiron Studios. He found himself a new song writing partner, Rami Yacoub and the pair continued their partnership for many years.
By the end of the 1990s, Max Martin was one of the big guns in the world of song writing. The album Millennium by Backstreet Boys featured no less than seven songs written or co-written by him. Millennium is one of the best selling albums of all time: over 24 million copies to date!
Martin wrote ….Baby One MoreTtime for The Backstreet Boys but they turned it down and it was offered to Britney Spears. It remains Britney’s biggest selling single.
Chieron Studios was closed down in 2000, despite its success and Martin formed a new production company with Tom Talomaa. They called it Maratone.
Max Martin has written for some of the biggest names in pop music: Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Westlife, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera….the list goes on!
