hat a year this has been for music! Oh boy, my tastes have changes so much throughout the year! With banger after banger being released, this list was very hard for me to narrow down! But nevertheless, here are the songs that have defined my 2017 (in no particular order!)
Temple - Tonight Alive
When this bad boy dropped, I literally listened to it on repeat for 2 full hours. This song is a vast contrast from their last album and is so much more rocker, possibly even grungy. I have not stopped listening to it since it was released and I cannot wait to start listening to the new album over and over again which has dropped today! Bring it on!
Glue - Fickle Friends
This song was my summer anthem and I have very fond memories attached to it! I used to listen to this song every day in the Newport City Radio office before cracking on with some work to do with the Love Live Music Awards. I discovered this band completely by accident and I am so glad I found them! I now adore every single they have out and I am buzzing for their debut album and their Cardiff tour date! I NEED to get tickets to that…
Young and Menace - Fall Out Boy
This was Fall Out Boy’s debut single from their upcoming new album and what a pure banger it is! Out of all the singles they have released, this still remains the one that excited me the most! It is literally so banging with epic beat drops throughout the song. I remember me and Dani listening to this in the office, sharing a pair of earphones during a bloggers meeting and quietly freaking out in the corner at its epicness!
New Rules - Dua Lipa
I was so late to the party for this one. It took me a while to warm to this track but, in November, it took hold of me and I could not stop listening to it. I adore the tempo and empowering lyrics to this one. I don’t know why I wasn’t fussed on it when it first came out with it being so catchy. Whenever it comes on my shuffle, I get so excited. I hope to hear more awesome songs like this from Dua Lipa in the future.
Goodmorning - Bleachers
Bleacher’s album Gone Now is one of my favourite albums of 2017. Every song on the album is perfection to me, but this is the one I have found myself listening to more. Its a song about coming to terms with the past and trying to move on but not being able to, which I think everyone can relate to on some level - but that is not the only reason why it is in this list. I adore they different layers of vocals that is going on in this song. There’s a multitude of lyrics and speech that overlap and harmonise throughout the track which is something brilliant to hear.
Idle Worship - Paramore
For me, this song totally overshadowed every song on the After Laughter album. I can’t help but mime my heart out wherever I am when this song comes on. I also find myself skipping the rest of the bangers to get to this one! It is about being put on a pedestal by someone and having so much expected of you but you know that you’re just going to end up letting that person down. This has to be the most powerful vocal performance of the album from Hayley. You can hear the emotion and the rawness in her voice. This song is simply perfection – from the angsty, passionate and relatable lyrics to the fabulous instrumentation. I LOVE it - especially LIVE!
Roots - Zac Brown Band
I will forever associate this song with Newport City Radio thanks to Adam L Davies introducing it to me. This song is all about remembering where you came from and what has made you who you are and for me, Newport City Radio is like home to me. I have made so many memories and lifelong friends here as well as gained so many wonderful opportunities off the back of my work here, it is an experience I will never forget. Reading that back, it sounds like I’m saying goodbye - I’m not! But this song just makes me reminisce about the amazing times I’ve had over the past few months.
John Wayne - Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga’s 2016 album Joanne has been a big part of my 2017 since this song was released as a single in February. This was the song that got me back into Gaga and fall in love with the album. It is so infectious to the ear along with the raunchy lyrics this song has teamed with an awesomely catchy tune that makes you want to dance along. I love the direction Lady Gaga went with this album and I’m super pumped to see what she releases next.
Mr DJ - Jennifer Hudson ft Mace
This one is not an actual song that has been released, but it’s down to our own Adam L. Davies yet again that I love this song. It is from Adam Sandler’s Netflix film Sandy Wexler, but it is such a great and catchy song that it became a massive part of my 2017 with the song being featured every week on our old radio show. It is also a very funny film that I recommend you check out if you can. Now we know. This is a good thing.
Sunday Finest - Sir Rosevelt
Another song and band I am obsessed with thanks to ALD (I spend too much time with him in the office) and I am so happy he introduced this song to me. I only heard this song for the first time in November and in just 2 short months, I am obsessed with everything Sir Rosevelt! This track is a feel good, EDM banger about partying and having a good time and it certainly is a good time for the ears! I recommend this song and this new and upcoming band to everyone! So good!
So there we have it. Another year over with some amazing music left behind to remember it. I am already so pumped for all the music 2018 will bring - ad that's just the albums I know of! Who knows what I may discover.
