In the year 2001, she released her debut album 'Songs In A Minor'. Who am I talking about? None other than Alicia Keys.. Lets find out more about her, her biggest hits and my personal top 5 faves.
According to Wikipedia, back in 1994 when she was enrolled in her brother’s after school program, she was introduced to her future record label, Arista Records. In April 2001, she released her debut single Fallin’ which spent 6 weeks at the top of Billboard Hot 100. Her album 'Songs In A Minor' then led her to win five awards at the 2002 Grammy Awards. In that same year, she collaborated with Christina Aguilera on her upcoming album Stripped on a song called Impossible, in which Alicia wrote, co-produced and provided background vocals.
Alicia’s 3 biggest hits were:
No One – In 2007-8, this song peaked at number 6 on the UK Weekly Singles Charts and peaked at number 3 on the UK RnB Weekly Charts. At the end of 2007, it peaked at number 49 on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 90 at the end of 2008.
Empire State of Mind featuring Jay-Z – In 2009, this song peaked at number 2 on the UK Weekly Singles Chart. This song is certified platinum in the UK and certified sales are 770,000.
Fallin’ - This song peaked at number 3 on the UK Weekly Singles Chart in 2001 and positioned at number 54 on the year end charts of the same year.
What I like about Alicia is that she’s a brilliant singer-songwriter and I like her quirky personality. She’s not afraid to say what she thinks and she’s not afraid to write music to express her feelings. She is one of the most inspiring young women that I think has ever graced the world of music and just in general.
My Top 5
Girl on Fire featuring Nicki Minaj
I love her song Girl on Fire featuring Nicki Minaj, I resonate with because it gives me a sense of empowerment and I feel like I could take on the world. The lyrics “she’s just a girl and she’s on fire…’”, for me, I think they tell people that I’m not to be messed with and that I have a fire building inside of me, wanting to come out.
I like this song because I feel like Alicia really connects with the lyrics she's written and she performs it really well. I can connect with the lyric.. "no-one , no-one can get in the way of what I feel for you.." because it reminds me of how I feel about my partner and how no-one can get in the way of how we feel for each other,
Empire State Of Mind featuring Jay-Z
I really like this song because I like how Alicia provides her vocals and how they go well with Jay-Z's rap during the song. I love how they're singing about New York because both of them grew up there and its kind of paying tribute to the city.
I really love this song as its got a really good beat to it. I also love the lyrics and how she sings it, I feel like its an 'anthem' for people who are going through a tough day and think they're not going to get past it, The lyric.." party people say.. party people say.. its a new day" .
Empire State Of Mind Part 2 (broken down)
I love this song because its stripped back and I feel like her vocals are amazing as she sings, This is the second part to her song with Jay-Z which I have featured at the top of this list. I feel like she wanted to give her own twist on this song and give her side of things, how she views the area she grew up in.
So there you have it. The prominent career of Alicia Keys and my top 5 favourite songs by her. Her career has spanned over 10 years. What I want to know is: What is YOUR opinion of Alicia Keys and what do you think of her music? You all know what I think. I now want to know your thoughts about her.
