here do I begin? Oh yes at Newport City Radio!
You see this is pretty much where the whole life changing incident began. My daughter Bianca was a volunteer and trainee disc jockey and had downloaded some Korean music for her show.
One morning in January 2014 I did something I don’t usually do. If I hadn’t I wouldn’t be sat here telling you this tale right now. I probably never would have visited Asia and I certainly wouldn’t have visited Paris, but I digress, you’re not here to hear about me, you’re here to hear about one of the greatest phenomena of the eastern world. That which is FT Island.
Five Treasure Island or FT Island as they are known, are a five piece idol band from South Korea in Asia. The difference with this idol band is that the pure raw talent they possess is unrivalled by anything anywhere else in the world. I found this out one January morning in 2014 when I had woken a little early, and for reasons I don’t know decided to listen to what my daughter had downloaded to use on her show and I hit play on Madly.
I wasn’t sure if it was Lee Hongki’s hauntingly beautiful husky vocals or the sheer emotion of the song playing to me, but I was completely enthralled. This haunting melody came at me and I had to listen to it again, and again and again.
I'm not often taken to flights of fancy, especially not about a young boy band from the other side of the world. Having dated one of Rolling Stone's Top 125 Guitarists of all time, I am very particular about the music I listen to. I needed to know, were this band as good as this first song promised? That night I came home and put on one of their concerts in Japan. There were at least 30,000 people in the audience. Choi Minwhan was the first to take to the stage. Better known by his nickname 'Minari' to his fans. FT Islands drummer was opening this gig, could they play as well as they looked?
