Things got worse for County before the break with Jed Wallace doubling Pompey’s lead with a header following a fine flowing move.
Substitute Ismail Yakubu pulled one back for the Exiles after heading in Robbie Willmott’s corner to create a tense last 20-minutes, before County were reduced to nine-men when Darcy Blake was shown a second-yellow card. The defeat is Newport’s first in three games but poor discipline ultimately cost the Exiles.
Manager Justin Edinburgh stuck with the same side that drew 0-0 against Bury last time out while the visitors’ caretaker manager, Andy Awford, brought in Johnny Ertl, Taylor and Hollands who was making his debut after signing on-loan from Charlton.
The home side started brightly and Andrew Hughes had the first chance of the match but his half volley cleared the crossbar. Pompey’s Taylor, very much a Dave Kitson lookalike, headed over from close range soon after.
Danny Crow sent through Willmott on the left but his driven shot was straight at the visiting goalkeeper. Mike Flynn, who scored a brace when the two sides last met, carved himself an opening but his scuffed shot was blocked by teammate Crow.
Chapman then came close with a powerful drive from distance before the first big talking point of the game occurred. Feely was attempting to shield the ball out for a goal-kick, but Taylor robbed him and the County defender's tug back at him was seen by the ref who awarded a penalty.
Taylor stepped up himself to take it and fired low into the bottom-left corner to open the scoring 22-minutes in. And things got worse for the home side less than 5-minutes later when Chapman was shown a straight red-card for a terrible challenge on Portsmouth debutant Hollands.
The red-card ultimately ended the fixture as a contest and Chapman was looking sharp until that point. Pompey scored their second before halftime when Hollands rose highest to head home a terrific Ricky Holmes cross after a flowing move.
The second-half started slowly but County came so close when Lee Minshull headed inches wide from Willmott’s free-kick. But against the odds, the 10-men pulled a goal back 74-minutes in.
Willmott whipped in a corner that substitute Yakubu headed in from six-yards out. That created a tense period in which County were well on top until Blake received a second-yellow card for bringing down a Pompey player on the edge of the box and County were reduced to nine.
Credit to County who fought hard with one, and then two men down, but a lack of discipline ultimately cost them anything from the game today.
