bout two weeks ago now, at the Apple Keynote, Apple announced the release of the “brand new” iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which went on sale today! However, I for one am far from pleased with the latest Apple smartphone.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Apple and their products - I am literally typing this blog on a MacBook! I also love how innovative the company is with their products too, but to me, the iPhone 8 and its Plus partner are far from innovative when compared to other smartphones currently on the market.
Let’s start with some pros; those 12 MP dual cameras! Oh boy, I was excited about these when they were put on the iPhone 7 Plus. One camera is wide-angle with a f/1.8 aperture and the second is a telephoto with an aperture of f/2.8 which to me and fellow videographers and photographers is just a dream!
With this dual camera system, you can capture magnificent wide-angled images while maintaining that fine detail with the telephoto lens. And of course, you have the option to use either one or the other depending on what you are shooting. But, these magnificent cameras are again only available on the Plus version of this phone, pushing the price up by another £100 if you want this feature.
However, speaking of videographers, both models of this phone shoot in amazing 4K at 24, 30 AND 60 fps; meaning some crisp slow mos! Speaking of slo-mo, these phones have the capability of shooting full HD at 120 and 240 fps. I am itching to have a go at this camera!
I could be here all day praising the cameras on these devices and I haven’t even mentioned the front-facing one. It features 7MP with full HD recording and new portrait mode which allows you to change the lighting just with the phone, I don’t know how it works but it looks so cool.
I think I should tell you why I am not impressed with the “new” iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
You may have noticed that I have been referencing these devices as “new” and I’ll tell you for why... it is because THEY ARE NOT NEW! Apple’s latest smartphone has had a “redesign” as they now have a glass back, allowing the phone to use wireless charging. Wow! What a brilliant new feature… that has been used on other smartphones for at least two years now. In that time Apple has released five different models of the iPhone without it.
Also, another fabulous new feature on these iPhones is that they are now waterproof. Amazing... this technology totally hasn't been available since 2013. The first touchscreen smartphone with this feature was the Sony Xperia 7 which was released in 2013 and since then other companies like Samsung with their Galaxy line of smartphones have implemented this.
You might be saying “but Shannon, the iPhone 7 was waterproof” and it was to a certain extent; it was water resistant with an IP67 rating. This means that it could be submerged underwater for 30 minutes. But I have to bring your attention back to Samsung as their Galaxy S7 was certified as waterproof with a rating of IP68 meaning that it was far superior at this than the iPhone 7 as it could be submerged deeper and still work perfectly.
Now the iPhone 8 finally has the same waterproof and dustproof rating as its highest competitor. Yes, I am being majorly picky about this point, but so are most people when it comes to which phone they are going to purchase and, these days, people value this feature much more than you think they would.
Overall, I think that these new iPhones are a waste of time and money for us consumers. The only new thing about them is the glass backing for wireless charging, but I can guarantee that everyone will smash it within the first few months. Nothing else about their overall design has changed. Still the same chunky bezels and Touch ID, force touch home button as the previous iPhone. I think Apple should have called this phone 7S because in my eyes that is what it is: a slight improvement on their last model and not at all innovative. Now if you want innovative, all you have to do is wait a few more weeks (or months given the possibilities of waiting lists) for the iPhone X.
What do you think about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus? Have you gone out and bought one on launch day? Do you think it's a waste of time like I do? Let us know in the comments below!
