elcome back to another exciting segment where we take a glimpse into some of the most exciting and iconic games that have made a mark in history, and some of the hidden gems of the retro era.
After four games of Soul Reavers cliff hanging ending Raziel returns for some unfinished business in Legacy of Kain: Defiance. This time you play as both Kain and Raziel alternating between levels, it picks up immediately after Soul Reaver 2 which is actually centuries before Soul Reaver 1 and about the same time as Blood Omen, well sort of ...it’s complicated. Just smile nod and go with it.
The last two games had fairly weak combat, but defiance goes to moderate lengths to remedy this, it what can best be described as a Devil May Cry like fighting style, Kain and Raziel hack their foes up with special speed combos and air juggle attacks. After you have stunned them you can suck there blood or steal their souls to improve your health, Its fun the first few times but you will be doing this quite a lot. Kain and Raziels attacks are both pretty much the same and there is a real lack of variety of when it comes to the enemy there are zombies, and angry human vampire hunters, and then occasional shadow monster phase and that’s about it. After a while mopping the floor with non-discrete monsters can become a bit of a chore, the chore is worth taking on though due to absorbing and well written story.
It might not make a lot of since if you haven't played the previous games in the series but the voice acting and twisting plot line makes it hard to put down even if you don't know who Mortainus and Janos Audron are. Be ready for a lot of Kain views and lots of Raziels eyes being in perspectives and the eye of the elder god, when not hacking up monsters and defining fate itself you will spend much of your time solving puzzles and the vampire forges, while the puzzles aren’t pretty good the forges themselves are all identical, it’s way too easy to get mixed up across the dam long hall ways.
Even with its minor problems Defiance is the best Kain game since the first Soul Reaver game and provides a much needed closure for the story line. That's right Kain fans there are no cliff-hangers here just entries and a few long awaited answers.
