The game pretty much kept with the same style of game play as found in Doom, but id crafted a distinctly different aesthetic, rather than the action movie style sci-fi theme Quake has a dark and broody atmosphere with music to match. The weapons in Quake are a bit different from those in Doom, but rather than starting off with a dinky little pistol you instead have a manly shotgun, and then you can find a double barrelled and it’s probably the weapon that you will be using throughout most of the game since this has the most portable ammo, and then you get a rather odd weapon ‘The Nail Gun’ that comes in two varieties, a rather stately doubled barrelled one that will do good damage, then you get the ‘Killertron’. Yes the nail gauntlet gun is probably the best weapon in the whole game, whatever it hits, it destroys.
Moving on when you first start the game you are given a rather unique difficultly screen, you have to walk down hallways, normal, easy, and by sacred hammer hard mode, yes you have to run over lava to get to the thing, there’s an even harder mode but it is hidden. The hard part isn’t finding it but rather it’s falling properly to access it, so you know that this mode is going to be hard-core since you have to walk into lava.
Now there are four worlds that are each fairly distinct from one another, but the end is pleasingly difficult and as you progress enemies will take a great deal of damage and they will dish out even more damage. Remember the Siren demon from Doom? Well he has got nothing on the Shambler that’s for sure.
Lastly what can be really said about the multiplayer other than the fact that at 20 years old, people are stilling playing it. Like with Doom there have been numerous source ports released, the one that I recommend is Dark Places as it fixes some of Quake ones bugs, it allows some more modern controls, and it just works far better. In the end I find it hard to recommend this game since most likely most people own it and have probably played it as much as I have, but in the other likely event go check it out.
