am a Queen fan! I was first aware of the band aged eight on listening on to the track Bohemian Rhapsody. Growing up I was instantly attracted their songs. I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody as I was interested in the life story of Freddie Mercury and the evolution of the band.
A spoiler warning may not be necessary as the this is not a review of the film as such, but as a biopic there maybe plot giveaways. Follow me through what I've learnt watching the film but be aware just in case you haven't seen the film and you want to have the same learning experience that I've had!
Freddie Mercury was from an Indian background as he was born in Stone Town, Zanzibar (now known as Tanzania).
Freddie joined a band called Smile after watching them perform on a stage in a local bar/club, managing to gain them a song writing and singing contract. Freddie decided along with the other band members that he wanted to change the band name to Queen as he was very flamboyant and also wanted the band to become big in the charts. Freddie classed them as family as he the band worked so closely together and they got along so well.
He also met his first love, Mary Austin who was a friend of Brian May (the guitarist in the band).
The track Bohemian Rhapsody came about as the band wanted an operatic twist and to do something different. However, there was a problem! Not one radio station would play the track as it was over six minutes long! One day Freddie and the band managed to get it onto radio and it become number one in the charts and a huge success.
Freddie then decided to leave the Queen to have a break. After this he announced he was bisexual. It was at this time that he then met up with Jim Hutton who tried to control him and jealously blocked him from seeing previous lovers and friends. Freddie’s first love, Mary Austin, managed to find his phone number, and told Jim Hutton about Live Aid, a huge concert at Wembley Stadium to raise funds for the famine in Ethiopia. This message wasn't passed on to Mercury, as Jim was trying to control him saying that he was busy all the time. Mary found out where Freddie lived and told him in person about the gig. At this point, Freddie broke with Jim and his controlling behaviour. Live Aid became really close to Freddie's heart, partly because he had a deprived family background himself.
According to Jim, Freddy was diagnosed with Aids in 1987, before there was a cure or the effective treatment known against the virus. He was feeling very rough and was coughing and found talking difficult. After breaking with Jim, he got back together with Mary Austin and decided to try and get the Queen back together. After a few discussions all the band members agreed and wanted to give it one last go. Freddy's condition was worsening at this stage, so he decided to tell the band about his illness. The band members responded well, and Freddie decided to then do music and enjoy it until the day he died and wanted to amaze his audience. He then managed to get into the Live Aid concert, after pleading with a few directors on the phone.
The day of Live Aid came, and he put all his effort into the performance as he knew this would be the last time on stage together as a band. Just before the ending credits, the film shows the day that Freddie died, on the 24th of November 1991, aged 45.
The film was very emotional tearjerker but also had some funny scenes. The movie was a pure blend of perfection. To sum up the Bohemian Rhapsody movie a 100% must watch. 12A rated film in cinemas now.
