new trailer for the much-anticipated film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom arrived during the Super Bowl. The newly released footage teases fans of the franchise with big bangs, ample dinosaurs and a horror style narrative.
This movie has a lot to live up to, with a loyal fanbase, and the massive success of the first Jurassic World film back in 2015. The team behind the movie have been working for months to build the suspense around this new release; first releasing an enigmatic still image, a trailer back in December, and now this latest Super Bowl offering.
I found December’s trailer disappointing; the volcano storyline, where the hero’s returned to save the dinosaurs from extinction, seemed predictable. The first movie opened up so many possible avenues for the franchise to take, and this seemed a safe option. However, the newly released trailer hints to a twist in this story.
2015’s Jurassic World movie opened up multiple applications for the dinosaurs to move into the real world; most interestingly to be used as weapons. The Fallen Kingdom trailer doesn’t confirm whether this avenue is going to be explored further, but it definitely seems to be taking dinosaurs out of the theme park and into the real world. This is a logical next step and follows the pattern seen in the earlier Jurassic Park to Lost World progression.
Another exciting aspect of the trailer is the promise of a new dinosaur. We don’t know much about this new creature and the trailer does not give it a name. However, we know it has some rather sharp claws and a terrifying array of teeth, which seem almost reminiscent of 1979 film Alien.
With piano playing, a lone rocking horse in the shadows and talons tapping, this trailer is definitely ramping up the horror vibe. I’m expecting the new instalment to be scary, but I hope they keep some of the humour of the last movie.
With the return of both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard to leading roles, we should hopefully be able to enjoy their offbeat relationship. Justice Smith is joining the cast for the new release and although details of his role are limited, he seems to be a main player.
The release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is still a few months away, with UK release set for June 7th.
