his Monday The Walking Dead is back with the Season 8 opener; their 100th episode. To mark this occasion, I’m expecting an explosive episode, with death, gore and maybe a few nods to earlier seasons.
What’s coming up in Season 8 is a closely guarded secret but that doesn’t stop the internet hypothesising. Earlier in the year producers released a full five-minute trailer for the new series and ever since, fan theories have been surfacing about what’s going to happen.
Here are my predictions for Season 8
All-out war is likely to be the main storyline throughout much of this season. At the end of the last season Rick gained the courage needed to stand up to Negan. Season 8 will put this to the test. Some fan theories suggest that Rick will be taken prisoner early into the series but I’m sure our protagonist won’t be out of action for long.
The trailer shows survivors from the Hilltop, the Kingdom and Alexandria, seemingly working together in battle. The main fight here definitely seems to be human but I’m certain we’ll see more of Walkers being used as weapons.
The show has come a long way since the early days of the outbreak. Rick’s group have survived several years of Walker attacks and are now seasoned pros in dealing with this element of the new world. Therefore the shift of focus onto human politics is a necessary progression for the show. Life is now about how our survivors rebuild their lives and establish communities; how they interact, trade and protect themselves against other settlements.
This season we’ll see more interplay between communities and more politics. But hardened zombie fans shouldn’t worry, the trailer hints at some large hoards coming our way in Season 8.
Dwight looks set to feature throughout Season 8. It’s still unclear where his loyalties really lie, so we could be in for some interesting plot twists. Although the comic shows Dwight firmly siding with Rick, it is possible that the TV show could decide to explore a different route.
In the trailer we see Dwight receive a message saying ‘tomorrow’. Based on the warlike imagery throughout the trailer we can assume that this is some sort of message denoting when the battle will commence. However, we are left guessing what Dwight’s facial expression here really means. Is Dwight preparing to battle against Negan from within, or will he warn him of the impending attack.
Turncoat Eugene is also going to be a key feature in Season 8. We have previously seen Eugene’s natural ability to lie to save himself, however at the end of Season 7 it appeared that Negan was starting to have doubts about Eugene’s loyalty.
Superficially, Eugene appears likely to side with whoever he feels is going to win, however we must remember he is extremely intelligent. He has also shown moments of bravery in earlier episodes when it comes to defending Rick’s group against outsiders. If he can keep Negan’s trust, Eugene is in the right place to sabotage the Saviours from within. If he can’t keep Negan’s trust, then things will end very badly.
A HAPPY ENDING
The end of the trailer shows Rick as an old man. This hints to a future after the battle against the Saviours. Much online fan theory suggests this image is a hint that the show will follow the timeline of the comic, with the story leaping several years forward in time after the battle. If this is the case then it is possible to assume the battle will play out much the same on TV as it did in the comics.
Even without this teaser, it isn’t a huge stretch to assume Rick’s group of survivors will ultimately triumph. They have done so throughout all seasons of The Walking Dead and I’m sure producers are not ready to give up on the brand just yet.
The 100th Episode airs in the UK on Monday 23rd October at 9pm.
