o it has been a good few weeks since the events of The Doctor Falls and many of us are still fanboying the appearance of the First Doctor, who is to be portrayed by Harry Potter and Game of Thrones star David Bradley.
For many of us ‘Whovians’ out there, David Bradley did a great job of portraying the late William Hartnell in the biopic drama An Adventure in Space and Time, which depicted the birth of show in 1963. To see him coming back in this year’s Christmas Special is... Well, it's Christmas for many of us ‘old-school’ fans. I for one am eager to see the return of the first incarnation of our favourite time travelling Doctor.
The Special has been promised be a fanboy’s dream, so I’m expecting it to be old-school Doctor Who, maybe with the odd reference here and there. I also have a feeling that Carole Anne Ford (Susan Foreman, the Doctor’s granddaughter) may grace us with an appearance, maybe towards the end of the Special. Who knows!? But, if it’s to be a fanboy’s dream, I think they’re going to have to throw Susan into the mix.
The title of the Special came as an announcement with the trailer, which I’m actually guessing was unveiled at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. The trailer has also revealed the setting of the episode and when in the First Doctor’s timeline it's set. The trailer has also confirmed the return of the brilliant Bill Potts. I was actually hoping to see her make a return. I'm just grateful that it isn’t Clara. The trailer has confirmed that Mark Gatiss is to make a guest appearance as First World War officer, who is only known as ‘The Captain' at the moment. Could we be seeing at least another Time Lord this year?
One thing I have to say about the trailer is that it looks exciting. I have very high aspirations for this year’s Christmas Special and when it comes to bringing the First Doctor back for an appearance you need to be careful not to upset many of the fans of the original show. Me being one of them! But then again I’ll do what any other Whovian would do and look past its flaws and praise the bits I thoroughly enjoyed. Unless it’s Love and Monsters or The Twin Dilemma. We don’t want to go there.
So without further a-do, here’s the trailer for this year’s Christmas Special, which has been called Twice Upon A Time. Now to “patiently” wait for Christmas Day…
