veryone's favourite prison, binge watching Netflix series is back!
Orange is the New Black season 5 dropped last Friday and there has been no time wasted in watching the series. But with the return of the series, we were also able to find out whether Daya shot the gun or not. If you have not yet seen the latest season, then read carefully, for this review contains spoilers...
Season 4 left us on a cliffhanger, with Daya pointing a gun straight at one of the COs. For the past year, we have waited to find out whether or not she would pull the trigger. She did as it goes and with it she triggered the rest of what would unfold.
Now, while the season was different to the previous ones, was it better? Don’t get me wrong, it was quite cool seeing the prisoners take over the prison and make it their own. But at some stages, I did miss the old natural prison feel to it.
Another question I keep asking myself is, would this be allowed to happen in real life? I know they had hostages in the prison and that’s probably why they didn’t storm the prison straight away. But after CO Coates escaped with the only gun they really had, what was stopping them then? Surely CO Coates could have told them where the hostages were being held so they could either avoid the crossfire, or get to their location as quick as they could. But I guess they needed to make a story.
Also, what happened to Red? Red has always been a strong character in the show and has always been a powerful woman within Litchfield. So, why is she such a puppy dog now? I get that she wants to protect her girls and the drugs didn’t help, but I feel they have slowly changed her character. If I turned up at Litchfield, I doubt Red would scare me.
One storyline I did like was Piscatella’s. In the last season we all found out that he was a homosexual. So being able to see more about his character was different. But the guy was nuts and I don’t think it’s just because his boyfriend was killed.
Episode 10 was one of, if not the most brutal episodes of the season. From watching Piscatella break Alex’s arm, cutting Red’s hair and watching him kill his boyfriend's killer with boiling hot water was just brutal.
Killing Piscatella off seemed to be the right thing to do. He had already been caught out about his past. Not only that, but kidnapping Red and her girls and torturing them wasn’t his best idea, so there wasn’t really anymore they could of done with his character. Not only would his job at Litchfield be over, but his entire career would be finished.
But once again, the season has ended on another cliffhanger. With the riot police taking back the prison and the only place left to secure being the abandoned pool area, we see the last remaining prisoners Red, Piper, Alex, Taystee, Cindy, Suzanne, Nicky and a handful of others all join hands as the police storm in. They have already shot Piscatella without hesitation, so what will happen when they enter the pool area? And what will the next season be like if the gang are all being carted off to separate prisons?
