The show also feels a lot darker and it seems that the story-arch for this year’s series is that of a hybrid, or quite possibly the build up to the death of Clara Oswald. It seems with little teasers from the cast and head writer of the show that Clara’s departure is a one-way ticket, which to many of us fans of the show are coming to the conclusion that she is going to be killed off, all we know is that her departure is going to be emotional and is going to kick the living daylights out of the Doctor.
The closeness that Capaldi’s Doctor and Clara have can guarantee that when she leaves the TARDIS for good, there won’t be a dry eye in the houses across the globe.
My only nag with this series is the lack of stories, even though this season has consisted upon two-part stories overall, that means this year we’ll only be given six stories instead of the usual 12-13. But on a positive, this season has been more exciting/entertaining.
The stories aren’t so predictable like the previous three have been. Mystery and excitement is well and truly back in the Doctor Who universe, it is also satisfying that Capaldi has extended his contract as the benevolent Time Lord.
Capaldi’s performance as the time-travelling Time Lord again is satisfactory and entertaining. His performance, like last year’s, is an amalgamation of the previous incarnations and I think with him being a life-long fan of the show he’s the ideal candidate for the role. After all, he’s got the experience and the knowledge of the show, being as he’s been watching the show from 23rd November 1963.
And with this season being unpredictable and entertaining it is fair to say that we, the fellow Whovians, the benevolent fans of the show are in for a hell of a season finale. Not to mention the return of River Song in this year’s Christmas special, that will be within weeks after the season finale.
So from Skaro, to Earth in the distant future, to the medieval times and then lastly present day with terrorist Zygons I currently rate this season a generous 4/5. 4/5 being as we’re not quite at the end yet, but as of Episode Nine ‘Sleep No More’ it will be the beginning of the end!
