The Exiles produced a dominant first-half performance with Adam Chapman and Mark Byrne linking up brilliantly in midfield and instantly looking to spread the ball to Ryan Jackson or Robbie Willmott on the wings.
In fact, the Exiles had 10 first-half shots to Cambridge’s one in the opening 45-minutes and the first of those saw Lee Minshull’s headed effort cleared off the line by Matteo Lanzoni.
Byrne then fired over before Aaron O’Connor really should’ve opened the scoring when Darren Jones headed a corner back across goal, only for the striker to nod over the bar from six-yards.
Last season’s top goalscorer Chris Zebroski was next to go close but curled a shot inches over the bar, before completely missing the ball shortly after from Jackson’s dangerous cross.
Kevin Feely had an effort cleared off the line before a heroic save by United ‘keeper Chris Dunn denied Minshull what looked a certain goal. Great build-up play again from County saw Byrne back heel the ball to Willmott who found Minshull at the back-post, only for a diving save to keep his header out.
Somehow, the Exiles weren’t ahead at the break and they were punished for not taking their chances right at the start of the second as Cambridge opened the scoring.
Luke Chadwick came on as a halftime substitute and within two-minutes of coming on, chested the ball down after Felly missed a header and coolly curled the ball beyond Joe Day in the County goal.
To say the goal was against the run of play is an understatement but shows again how football can be a cruel game, with the home side punished for not taking their many first-half chances.
Willmott nearly equalised with a volley that went just wide before Byrne came closer still after he rattled the crossbar with a curling effort.
The Exiles eventually got their equaliser in the final minute as Andy Sandell broke clear down the left and squared the ball to Willmott who calmly slotted home from 12-yards, to send the home fans wild.
