y horrified exclamation should have been enough, “MUM!” but Tyler followed it up with.
“Aunty Jane NO! Starr’s my best friend, that would be like… rank.” Tyler said. Mum was consoled. I was insulted. Don’t get me wrong I knew I wasn’t one of the Issy’s or any of the other bevy of beautiful girls Tyler always had on his arm, but ‘rank’? I wore glasses, I had curly dark blonde hair and green eyes, and no I didn’t wear false eyelashes, fake tan, have waxed everything and a bermuda triangle or whatever it was called, but ‘rank?’
“Yes, Mum totally rank!” I reiterated his point, he raised his eyebrow at me. As we were fully clothed we both got up there and then and made our way downstairs to aunty Jane who was beside herself.
“Sorry Mum. I came home and she was just gone in her bed, I couldn’t bring myself to wake you…” Tyler had said hugging Aunty Jane. “I’d intended to tell you this morning but I fell asleep.”
“It was only right you should tell Starr first…” Aunty Jane said, and we all sobbed over the loss of our furry best friend.
We held a funeral service for her that afternoon in Aunty Jane’s back yard. As we were sat in the house reminiscing over Trixie afterwards, the doorbell went, it was Issy. Aunty Jane invited her through to the kitchen where we were all ensconced around the breakfast bar.
“Tyler where have you been? We were supposed to be in town an hour ago! Your phone is off! What’re you playing at?”
“Trixie died.” Tyler said sadly. Simply but sadly.
“And? Your dog died, so what? You couldn’t call me to let me know you’d be late! I mean why switch your phone off in the first place?” At which she huffed in a self important manner. I saw my mum's eyes narrow as she looked at Jane. I saw Jane’s eyes narrow as she looked at Tyler. Then I saw the look of absolute disbelief on Tyler’s face.
“WHAT THE FUCK?!” Not quite a shout but darn near. Jane didn’t correct him so he must have been in the right, so we all looked back to Issy as Tyler stood up. “Get out of my house!” He said pushing Issy toward the door unceremoniously. Issy tried to protest. “OUT!” Tyler yelled and pointed toward the front door.
“Are you coming later or what?” Issy asked clearly not getting the message.
“Go fuck yourself!” Tyler said, causing myself, my mum and Jane to gasp.
And just like that Tyler and I were besties again. So it was a bit of a surprise to me when Tyler came back to mine later, asked what I was doing and mentioned that we didn’t ‘hang out’ any more.
Tyler got a job at the bakery for over the summer and I got a job at the game shop next door. Actually years of going in for games had really paid off and ensured I’d be in exactly the right shop for the summer.
Tyler and I spent lunchtimes together, while he fended off a hoard of girls. When I mentioned this to him he thought I’d called him a ‘whore’ when I explained what the word meant he sort of nodded then when I followed it up with, "But if the cap fits," he didn’t speak to me for the rest of the day.
