osh noted Carys looked phenomenally well. Her suit had the cut of an expensive designer, her shoes likewise. Her hair contained highlights and lowlights, her makeup done to perfection, she wore the tan of someone who had just returned from abroad, as did Rhys. The two kept exchanging glances, that’s when Josh noticed that Carys was wearing a wedding ring. He wasn’t sure why his eyes flicked immediately to Rhys, but there on Rhys’ left hand, also a gold band. No, it couldn’t be.
“We want custody of the children, we can offer them more security than you can, financially and emotionally.” Carys usually not one to speak out caught Josh off guard with her openness and frank honesty.
“No” Josh said simply. Carys noted the lack of anger which previously would have consumed him.
“On the grounds of the violence, adultery and emotional torture I will win custody of the children. The children have been under the care of social services whilst in your care, all this will go against you in court. If you don’t hand the children over to me, I will take them legally and you will never see them again.” Again Carys spoke with sincere conviction and no fear.
“No,” Josh said again. “Now both of you please leave my house.”
“Daddy is mummy leaving us again?” Callie asked, and before Josh could answer.
“No Callie I am not leaving you again, I have spent the past year getting everything together for you to come and live with myself and uncle Rhys.” At which she held her arms out for Callie to run into, Callie happily obliged.
“Mummy can I have a puppy?”
“Better than that, you can have your own pony,” Rhys butted in ruffling the child’s curls, before turning to Josh. “You did bring this upon yourself you know, you had a wonderful woman and…”
“I know that now,” Josh said looking firmly at Carys.
“You need to do what is best for the children Josh, think about it, and make the right decision.” Carys said turning to leave, she stopped as she got to the front door. “In the interim I will have contact with the children, and naturally an order is already put forward to the courts.”
Josh nodded. “The children need their mother…” he said.
“I’m glad you see that!” Carys said raising her chin and holding her head high in a way she never would have done when she was with Josh.
Rhys took her hand, the way he had done the night she had bolted out of the front door, black and blue and covered in blood. He had seen the light on when he and Josh had pulled up in the taxi. He had known Josh wouldn’t react well to Carys waiting up for him, and so Rhys had waited in the taxi outside. Rhys had always loved Carys, she had been his first love, but being painfully shy, he had foolishly told Josh who had made his move on her, before he had the courage to do so.
Josh had always been too competitive, he wanted everything that Rhys had, without working for it, without caring about it. Josh had been cold, cruel and callous, he had treated Carys abysmally, egged on by Rhys, who wanted Carys to know she was too good for Josh. When Carys had exited the house, Rhys had taken her hand and taken her away from all the pain, the way he had planned to from the day Josh had announced she was his woman.
Now Carys was Rhys’s woman and always would be.
