he social worker said,“There’s no need to be aggressive Mr Mason, we’re just trying to ascertain how your son received such serious injuries as a broken arm, two broken front teeth and several lacerations to his nose and mouth.”
“Well I told you didn’t I? He fell down the stairs!” Josh leaned over the table to make sure the social worker got the point.
“Yes you did Mr Mason.” The female social worker said without a hint of emotion.
“Wait, what? A broken arm? Lacerations?” He hadn’t realised Harry’s arm was broken, how had he not realised that?
“His teeth went through his lip Mr Mason, in fact one of the teeth broke off and embedded itself in his bottom lip. His arm was broken, and the soft tissue in his nose had ruptured causing his nose to bleed.” Winston Davies informed him, again without emotion.
“Is he OK?” Josh said, he really hadn’t realised Harry’s injuries were that bad, and he got up to go find his son.
“Please remain seated Mr Mason, Harry is receiving the best possible care.” Winston Davies said again without intonation, simply pointing to the seat in front of him. “And you say you don’t know where Mrs Mason is?”
“Her name is Carys Jones, she’s my girlfriend not my wife and no she…” it suddenly dawned on Josh it looked like they thought he had done those things to Harry. “Hey look I never hurt my son!” Josh said angrily standing back up.
“Please remain calm Mr Mason or I’ll have to summon the police.” Winston Davies said.
“Call the fucking police? What fucking for?” Josh yelled slamming his fists onto the table making both the social workers jump. Winston Davies nodded to the woman, and as if on cue, the door opened and two rather large male police officers entered.
“OH JUST FUCKING GREAT!!” Josh said and sat back down.
“We’ll carry the interview on at the police station.” Winston Davies said to the police officers.
“What about my kids?” Josh asked.
“In the absence of a parent, the children will be taken into temporary social services care Mr Mason, until we can ascertain they are not in any danger.”
“I’ve never raised a hand to my kids!” Josh said indignantly.
“Never?” Winston Davies asked him clearly disbelievingly. Then Josh realised, he had once slapped Callie’s bottom because she had run into the road. He had slapped the back of Harry’s hand away when he had reached out to touch the hot cooker plate. One of the police officers asked Josh to put his hands behind his back. He told the police officer there was no need for the cuffs. “Hands behind your back, please…” the police officer repeated, but his tone brooked no argument. Josh did as he was told.
