arys managed eventually, "You hateful swine."
Carys knew it was coming, as Josh hit her face hard with the back of his hand before pushing her onto the sofa. Maybe seeing the blood gushing from her mouth, her bruised cheek and her bust lip was what brought him up short, people would eventually realise that she wasn’t ‘that’ clumsy that she kept walking into things, but for whatever reason he stood back and stopped the violence, which could usually have gone on for quite some time.
“You know what? You’re not even worth it!” he hissed in her face and spat at her. Carys wiped the spit and blood off her face and flicked it off her hand, and as Josh headed up the stairs to bed, Carys walked out of the front door in just the clothes she stood up in, she didn’t look back.
“OI CUNT!” Josh screamed after her, “get back here and look after your twatting bastards!” at which Josh heard the children start to cry upstairs. Callie first followed by Harry. Josh made his way back down the stairs, opened the front door and looked up and down the street, it was already well after sunrise, the street was empty. Where could she go? She had no one. She’d be back. Josh fumed, he turned and slammed the front door shut and stormed up the stairs.
“Dad didn’t mean it guys, now go back to sleep will ya!” he yelled through to the kids before throwing himself on the bed and covering his head with a pillow in a vain attempt to shut the noise out. She must have gone to the shop, and with her face like that too! Showing off to the neighbourhood what a bad boyfriend Josh was! Well he’d show her when she got back! She’d get a matching blackened cheek on the other side, then, the neighbours could talk! When she got back, and she had better be here by the time he left for work!
The kids eventually settled down, and Josh drifted off to sleep, to be awoken at eight by the alarm. Josh sat up groggily, looking to the back of the door for his clothes for today, there were none. “Carys did you iron the T-shirt and jeans I told you to yesterday?” he yelled down the stairs. She’d be down the stairs giving the kids their breakfast. There was no reply.
“CARYS! MY CLOTHES?!”
Still no reply. Just then the bedroom door opened, Callie peeped her head round the door, “Hey Pumpkin where’s your mum?” he asked his four year old daughter, before holding his arms out for her to run into and give him a hug. Callie remained by the door and shrugged her shoulders. “Isn’t she downstairs?” Josh asked. Callie shook her head. “C’mere Pumpkin,” Josh motioned to her, Callie gingerly made her way over to him, Josh gathered her up into a hug and sat her on his knee. He hated the way Carys always made him out to be the bad guy to the kids, she knew how much he loved them really.
“Tell ya what, looks like mum went to the shop so you go get your brother up and daddy will make breakfast how’s that sound?” he asked looking down at his daughter’s unsmiling face. Callie nodded. “Soldiers and eggs?” Josh asked, finally a bit of a smile as Callie nodded and slid down off his knee to go get Harry out of bed. Josh ran his fingers through his hair in exasperation. Did Carys think this was funny? He had to be in work for nine, she’d better get a move on!
Just then there was a bump, bump, bump and an hysterical cry from Harry as he fell down the stairs. “Callie! Can’t you just watch him for two minutes!” Josh yelled as he ran down the stairs. He scooped the two year old up into his arms.
