osh approached the house, the lounge light was still on, which meant Carys was still up. It meant something else too, that she wasn’t happy about something. He considered turning and walking away, he’d stay at Rhys’s house, but looking at his watch at ten to five in the morning when he had to be up at eight for work, he was probably better just going in and facing the music. If she had a go at him he’d just slap her, put her back in her place and head off to bed, same as he always did.
Josh and Carys had met at university, she had been a favourite of Rhys’s, Josh and Rhys although best friends, were always in competition so Josh made a play for her and won. Two kids both under five years of age and failed degree courses later, he was unequivocally regretting that decision.
Carys had caught pregnant at the beginning of their second year. Refusing to have a termination, she had to give up university to look after the child and he’d had to give up university and find a job to support them. Working at the local mall in a clothes store got him laid several times during the week and brought home just enough to cover food and living expenses for her and the kids. Thankfully Rhys, who hadn’t been stupid enough to knock some girl up, finished university and now had an excellent job as a solicitor, paid for him to go out every Friday and Saturday night. The clubs were always full of girls ready and eager to get on and show him a little piece of their heaven. He wiped his mouth subconsciously, sneered and opened the door to the inevitable.
Carys sat looking at him, clearly she hadn’t slept all night. Carys had once been a bit of a looker, but two kids and no money for clothes or makeup had well and truly taken their toll, now she was just a dowdy has-been, Josh thought. For a moment he considered the girl she had been, long wavy brown curls she could sit on, full voluptuous figure, and now, the hair had gone and the curves had given way to stretch marks and baby fat which she was too lazy and too greedy to work off.
Josh jumped straight to the defensive screamed and ranted and raved, smashing ornaments and furniture. She had no right to wait up for him, who did she think she was to spy on him? Pointing in her face, towering over her, threatening tones, threatening gestures, she wouldn’t dare answer him back or she knew what she’d get!
“You gave me a sexually transmitted disease” Carys said. She didn’t raise her voice, she just stated it very matter of fact. Josh stepped back a moment in shock, he had no defence to that.
“Well, what do you expect? Have you taken a good look in the mirror? I’m just fulfilling my function as your live in boyfriend, of course I’m going to go and seek a proper woman every now and again. I mean, if I left you, who’d want you now? Take a fucking good look at yourself you ugly fat cow.” At which he dragged her off the sofa, pushed her in front of the mirror over the fire and made her look in the mirror, “see what I mean? You’re fat, you’re dowdy, you’re fucking ugly! It makes me sick to fuck you, but still I do it because who the fucking hell else is going to!”
