A Book Review
The Moonhollow Origins by Sam West
Sam West is from Newport. He is a qualified drone pilot but when he's not photographing the landscape, weddings and all sorts of other subjects, he loves to write. This is his first published novel and has been well recieved in countries all around the world, including Japan!
Sam is an occasional volunteer at Newport City Radio and a member of The PenDragon's Writers Guild, based in Newport.
The cover of this book features an eye catching illustration of the three main characters within the story: the innocent young boy Kestrel, his friend Quill who has a dubious past and the mysterious Moonhollow Master, Elys whose power of magic gets them out of trouble every step of the way.
When Kestrel is orphaned, he quickly has to learn to live by his wits. He gets by day to day until he stumbles upon a dying man who entrusts him with two strange objects which he begs Kestrel to deliver to The Moonhollow Academy, many miles away from the boy's neighbourhood, Ninehook.
Here begins an adventure which forces Kestrel to fight for survival, learning much about life, friendship and magic along the way.
On their journey to the expected safety of The Moonhollow Academy, Kestrel and his friends encounter many weird and unfriendly groups of beings: Bandits, Shade Spectres, Hornigraths, Wurtles and Lumens. Kestrel discovers that he has the ability to develop magical skills himself. He just has to learn to use them wisely.
As with every good story there is an element of romance when Kestrel falls in love with the daughter of the man who sent him on his dangerous mission. As the book draws to a close, there are clues that the story is a long way from over and that another adventure for the group of friends is on the horizon.
There is action on almost every page of this book and anyone who loves fantasy adventure will thoroughly enjoy it.
Sam West's words illustrate the story beautifully and one gets a vivid image of how The Moonhollow Origins would come across if it were made into a film.
The Moonhollow Origins by Sam West is available from Amazon in paperback or as a Kindle download.
