aron said,“Obviously not this time,” and hung up. He put a call straight through to his manager to make sure she didn’t get through to him again, and while he was on a major baking firm wanted the rights to manufacture his Kickin' Cherry Pie. They'd opened the bidding with a six figure sum, Aaron wanted to call the Pie Aaliyah's Kickin' Cherry Pie, and smiled to himself. “Hold out for three if they're serious, two and a half if they look like they'll buckle, and two %,” he told the manager and put the phone down, still smiling, Wow, she really had got to him and it seemed like she was being somewhat of a good luck charm, he never would have made the cherry pie if it hadn’t been for her.
“Six months tomorrow.” Beth broached the subject tentatively. Of course, Aaliyah didn’t need reminding, six months to the day since her best friend had been taken, since months to the day since she had been left unable to walk unaided, for the first few months confined to a wheelchair.
“The worst of it is, if he had just done the right thing and called the police when it happened, Sam would still be here.”
“You can't say that,” Beth tried to reason. But Aaliyah could, Aaliyah could still hear her friend breathing an hour after the car Sam had been driving had been knocked off the road and down an embankment. Aaliyah still couldn’t sleep with the light off, couldn't get into a lift without having a panic attack, being trapped in the dark for three hours before Sam's father had found the car where it had left the road. Where Sam's father had found his daughter dead, and Launceston Riley was walking round like he was the bloody victim! Like because he had been caught, the world should feel sorry for the bastard who while driving blind drunk had forced another car off the road and then instead of getting help HE WENT HOME TO HIDE FROM THE LAW AND GET HIMSELF SOBER. The words resounded like a bomb going off in her head.
Her phone went off, SickG had sent her a message on Facebook, she put the phone back down, she couldn’t be bothered with that psycho right now, Sick, yeah that about hit the nail on the head. When her phone continued to go off Beth asked who it was? Aaliyah told her, “You're talking to her?” Beth asked incredulously. Aaliyah wasn’t even sure why she was giving this 'SickG' girl the time of day other than she seemed desperate to make friends. Aaliyah recounted the cherry pie incident, Beth laughed, “Maybe she knows him?” Aaliyah laughed, coincidence. “Don't trust her A'” Beth said, Aaliyah had no intention of.
Beth left, Aaliyah got on her computer 76 messages from SickG, starting with 'hi' and ending up SickG: 'WTF did I do now?'
Aaliyah Olio “I wasn’t here, I was with a friend”
Aaron had picked up a book, which promptly got thrown across the room when he heard the Facebook alert.
SickG: “A boy?” he typed back furiously. The inference totally threw Aaliyah, 'psychopath' she thought.
Aaliyah Olio “I have to go, you scare me” she typed back.
SickG: “NO! Please don’t go! I'm sorry” he was silent, Aaliyah sat and stared at the screen.
SickG: “Do you read?” now he was desperate to keep her talking, anything so she didn’t go.
Aaliyah Olio “Yeah” she typed back despite herself, SickG seemed a really desperate person, maybe she should just block them and go offline for a while until they found someone else to troll.
SickG: “What do you read?” he asked , this is where she would stop her dead in her tracks! She looked to her bookcase and her eyes sought her favourite book, the one she picked up often, even though she had a kindle, there was nothing like feeling paper in your hands and getting lost in Emily Bronte's world.
Aaliyah Olio 'Wuthering Heights' she typed back, SickG had probably never heard of it!
SickG: “Bronte' excellent choice, I'm just reading Poe” he typed back, this surprised her, she was expecting SickG to say a comic.
Aaliyah Olio 'Are you a boy?' finally she asked the question that was on her mind.
SickG: “Why? Does it matter?”
Aaliyah Olio “Why Poe?”
SickG: “I can get lost in his dark psyche, makes me forget where I am, my problems, you know, I suppose now you think I'm really mad ha?”
Aaliyah Olio “Actually no, now I can relate, book or ebook?”
SickG: “Has to be paper every time I can't get on with e-readers”
They talked for a while, SickG mentioned that Aaron G was on a children's programme early in the morning, and that SickG had to get to bed to get up in time to watch it.
Aaliyah Olio “Wow you're really obsessed”
SickG: “You not getting up to watch him then?”
Aaliyah Olio “Will you call me an anti-fan again if I say no?”
SickG: “No, I’ll call you a no fan!”
Aaliyah Olio “Oh OK, I'd best get up then hadn’t I?”
