unice asked, “Is he available for hire?” All the women laughed; Cass included. Lisa asked if his father had been anything like the son as she had only got to know Cass since his death.
“In so many ways yes, but Rory was also a gentleman. He held doors open and bowed to ladies. He would have greeted you stood by the door and shook your hand as you entered.” It was clear Cass’s eyes were filling up. She missed Rory so much still.
“And his son?” Gail enquired.
“Is mischief personified…” Cass said in a tone of genuine affection.
The sofa opened out into a bed and was large enough for four; there were also two lazi-boys and during the evening Liam brought in the blow up beds already prepared. He was wearing a pair of pajama bottoms; showing off his toned midriff and the admiring glances he was getting weren’t going unnoticed.
Cass had put a horror movie on after the sexy rom-com and he stationed himself between her and Eunice on the sofa. When a scary bit came on he called out,"‘Mummy," ducked his head under the quilt and onto her shoulder, making all the women in the room laugh. Eventually he just laid his head on against her and watched the movie. When the movie was over and Cass was headed up to bed; Liam gave all the women a kiss on the cheek goodnight. Cass reflected that the horrible teenager had been replaced by a charming young man and she wished they’d got to know each other long before as it would have made his father very happy.
When they reached the top of the stairs he pulled her into a hug and thanked her. She wasn’t sure what for? He said for allowing him to be a part of her girly night. She said it had been all the ladies greatest pleasure and that he was already invited to the next one.
On the Monday morning Cass was up and ready for work but there was no sign of Liam. She called out to him a few times and received just a grunt in response. Eventually when she had knocked on his bedroom door a few times and just had grunts in response and a “I’m not well,” she opened the door. He was still in bed with his head under the pillow.
This she remembered from his school days. Been here done this, got this t-shirt. Asking him what was the matter he just said, "Sick."’ Cass got the first aid box; she had ipecac to cause vomiting and buccastem to stop nausea, she had laxatives and loperamide, painkillers, migraine solutions. You name it; she had it and Liam was going to work!
Liam had other ideas. Cass got the thermometer out. “If you have a temperature you can stay home," she said. Liam refused to bring his head out from under the pillow to have his temperature taken.
“Ya! If you don’t put it in your mouth right now the only other way is, I will stick it up your bum and you won’t like that!” Exactly the words she had said when he had been about fourteen and refusing to have his temperature taken. He had glared at her and she had thrust the thermometer in the general direction of his bottom and as he had opened his mouth to protest she had stuck the thermometer in. He hadn’t had a temperature; he’d had a severe case of ‘homework not done’. So Cass had told him she’d ring in sick for him but he had to get his homework done and go in after lunch. Cass was remembering the incident when Liam pulled the quilt off himself pulled his pajama bottoms down and gestured to her to go ahead.
“I mean it!” She said. He lifted his bottom in response; grabbed her hand and had just put her hand on his bottom when a noise from the doorway made them both start. Brandi was stood by his bedroom door.
