odd asked,“We're having a leaving party at the Beswick hotel, I hope you can make it?”
“When?” she asked. He hadn’t thought she might not be able to make it because of work. He tried to think hard, he would book it for the night of the last exam which was a Thursday, surely she hadn’t consented to go into work that night.
“Yes, I can make that night,” she said and he could hear her smiling./
Todd had some news he had been keeping to himself, he wanted to tell Carmel first. He booked one of the Beswick function rooms for the party, and a room for himself for the night. Once it had been booked he put it up on the social network, it would be a black tie and formal dress party.
The last exam was finished and everyone was looking forward to the party. Carmel chose a simple ankle length dress with sequin shoulder straps in cream, and cream high heels, with a small caramel bolero, simple yet stunning and she admired her reflection in the mirror. Todd was waiting by the door to greet the guests, but only one he had any real interest in greeting.
He kissed her hand as she arrived, she felt warm and giddy and had only had one glass of wine before she left. Todd didn’t take his eyes off her all night.
Toward the end of the night when drink had relaxed everyone's formality, Todd had This Boy's Fire put on and requested a repeat of 'The Dance' the whole party started chanting 'dance', 'dance', over and over, Todd took Carmel's hand, he had it put on repeat again. This time the dance set the two of them on fire, and at the end of it, instead of letting go of her, he took her by the hand and led her to his room.
There were two champagne flutes and a bottle of champagne. Todd poured the champagne as Carmel sat on the end of the bed.
“I have something to tell you,” he began and she knew this wasn’t going to be good news.
“I have been accepted to study politics at Oxford,” he said. Carmel smiled, and wholeheartedly congratulated him, even though she knew deep down, that meant Tammy Lewis would probably take her place by his side again. The fact was, his father had made sure he and Carmel could never be together, Carmel had accepted that for Jessie and Penny's happiness. He removed his jacket and bow tie and sat on the bed next to her, they clinked glasses, linked arms and drank.
“I want to wake up next to you, one last time” Todd said.
“Mmmm,” Carmel replied.
