odd asked hopeful, and she thought about it for a moment, before nodding her head “mmmm”. He said nothing more and got out of the car.
Somewhere along the line the boy’s father had started to realise that Jessie wasn’t spending every night in his own bed. “He knocks that under-age girl up, and I will kill you,” his father said to Todd, and no amount of Todd’s assurances would sway him. Jessie's nights at Penny's would have to come to an end. His father started ranting about the irresponsible mother, he didn’t know how hard their mother worked, and she didn't expect her daughters to allow a boy to stay.
“But we're not having sex!” Jessie protested. Todd knew this, he knew they had far too much love and respect for each other and that neither of them would put the other at risk. Still Todd arranged to collect Jessie every night at eleven. There would never be another opportunity for Todd to creep into Carmel's bed and put her answer to the test, which is just what his father intended.
Weeks passed, Todd kept his distance from Carmel. The weeks toward Christmas filled with dread for Penny as Jessie and Todd were going to Japan to spend Christmas with their mother, and so far, since the day they had met they hadn’t spent one full day apart.
On the day after the schools broke up, Carmel came back from shopping to find Penny sobbing her heart out on the bed, “Oh babe what’s the matter?” Carmel asked.
“Jessie has left for the airport, he is going to Japan.” Carmel mistook it that he had either dumped her or that he had no intention of returning. Penny looked up at her disgusted, as if she could think such a thing! “I can't be without him for two weeks,” Penny said burying her head in her pillow and bawling, her whole body racked with sobs, she clung to the pillow like it was her lifeline. Carmel had never seen anything so devastating in her whole life, she pulled Penny off the bed and like a scene out of a movie, she put her in the car and drove her to the airport for that all important goodbye.
The scene in the airport was not much different. Jessie sat there sobbing just letting the tears fall to the floor. “It's only two weeks,” Todd tried to console, it only served to make Jessie sob more. Then he got a call from Penny to say she was on her way, and suddenly he brightened up. But they started to call his flight before she arrived.
