ello again, glass eye watchers. ‘Nelson’ (my glass eye) and his predecessor, also known as ‘Nelson’ want me to share the story of his lucky escape from an earthquake.
Earthquake? No. Nelson got this horribly wrong. It was a visit – one of two – made to a rock concert. We actually went to see Status Quo, Rick Parfitt, Francis Rossi and co. who were very good, and Very Loud.
We were advised to take seats in the circle at the Opera House in Blackpool for visibility reasons, as the audience in the stalls were standing and probably trying to get so near to Status Quo that they would be able to strum the guitars themselves.
Nelson didn’t really complain although he must have wondered what he was doing in the head of a mad rock man.
My eye is now very sensitive to vibration, temperature and so on, as a result of a fire we were in. The damage is permanent and I’ll be like this for the rest of my life. As usual Nelson had become loose in the way it has done for years.
During the show, Nelson vibrated quite noticeably, being overdue for a refit. It’s difficult to describe, but imagine the sensation of loose false teeth.
I wasn’t sure what Nelson was going to do. I thought he was going to do his leap of faith thing – a suicide jump. Fortunately, he avoided this but he did move out of alignment, but he didn’t quite fall out of the circle at the opera. So, really a near miss this time.
See you next time.
