The same thing happened at the house. Lowrie broke down devastated. She put a deposit on a place not far from the FAC main office, in the same building as Frey and Armand, who was also starting at FAC, and Frey prepared for the pending divorce proceedings. Two weeks later Lowrie received a call from Hae-Lo asking if she would come to the house the following day? There was a note of pity in her voice which Lowrie picked up on immediately.
Lowrie had tried to reason that, she and Gong-Huk hadn’t really had a marriage, and she should just let it go, which she intended to do. Lowrie opened the front door and got a shock when Gong-Huk had Chang Xia in the car with him. “You bring your mistress to our marital home with you to serve me with divorce papers? See you in court, arsehole!” Lowrie said incredulously.
“You left me Lowrie!” Gong-Huk said. She snorted mirthlessly and turned to go back into the house, Gong-Huk grabbed her arm. Out of reflex and many years of karate she put his arm up his back and marched him back to his car. His driver went to intervene, Gong-Huk stayed him. As she pushed him into the car she took a photograph with her mobile which had been in her pocket. She snatched the envelope which was still in Gong-Huk's hand and ran back to the house before he could see that she was crying.
Gong-Huk was different, gone was the boy, in his place was a young man. Lowrie had realised that, the second he stepped out of the car. The baggy jeans, t-shirt and trainers had been replaced by a designer suit, tie and shoes. She shut the door behind her, heard the car pull off the drive and gave way to the tears she had fought so hard to keep at bay. She didn’t read the divorce petition, she called Frey as she had been advised to do. Hae-Lo met her with pitying looks as she walked through the door, Lowrie ignored her, went into the lounge picked up her bag and left, she was never coming back to this house. If her father wanted her he knew where to find her, Hae-Lo didn’t and that was just the way she liked it, she was cutting all ties with the Lees.
Frey wasn’t in when she got home, she put the petition into his post box and went home. A couple of hours later she was awoken to someone at her door, it was Frey. “Didn't you say you have tried to contact him every day since he returned to Korea in April?” Lowrie agreed she had, Frey read her some of the petition, 'After many attempts to contact my wife to remedy our marital problems..... finding her telephone number has been disconnected.... no replies to my emails.... unreasonable behaviour.... relationship with Godfrey Fletcher” Lowrie looked at Frey blank, this should have been her petition not his!
