Seat is a Spanish auto mobile manufacturer with its head office in Martorell, Spain. It was founded on May 9th in 1950, by the Instituto Nacional de Industria, a state owned industrial holding company. It is also currently an owned subsidiary of the German VW Group.
Seat since it was first founded has been involved in many different sports using their cars, motor sport, rallying, touring cars, grand tourer cars and formula racing.
Seat's involvement in motor sport tracks back to the 1970s, with the brands contribution to the national races in Spain and by the end of the same decade the start of its implication to rallies.
Seat's first attempt at rallying was in 1977 at a World Rally Championship when they took part with its Seat 1430/124D Especial 1800 race car.
In formula racing, in 1970 Seat set up the ' Formula Nacional' series in Spain, a year later to be known as Formula 1430. The single seater formula cars, which took part driven by young Spanish drivers, were equipped under support from Seat with engines of the 1430 and 6700 gear boxes. The first race of the 'Formula Nacional' series took place at the Jarama circuit in Madrid.
Seat's corporate tradition, as a VW Group subsidiary, has it that the nomenclature for a great number of models in it's range gets inspired from the Spanish culture. For this purpose, a large number of Seat's production models have been named after places in Spain (e.g. Arosa, Cordoba, Leon, Toledo, Altea, Alhambra, Malaga, Marbella, Ronda, etc). However, there have been many cases where the denomination for a specific model did not derive directly from the Spanish heritage of the marque.
With some production models of Seat cars, some models have been given names of Hispanic dances (e.g. Tango, Bolero, Salsa). As a reminder from the past, also comes the iconic 'Bocanegra' name meaning 'black mouth' in Spanish, which accompanies the Ibiza model and has its origins in the Seat 1200 Sport, the original 'SEAT Bocanegra' due to its black painted fascia in the front.
A few faves of mine are:
The SEAT Ibiza is a super mini car manufactured by the Spanish auto maker Seat since 1984. It is Seat's best-selling car. The Ibiza is named after the Spanish island of Ibiza, and its use in the super mini car was the second nomenclature in naming models after Spanish cities, after the Seat Ronda.
It was introduced at the 1984 Paris Motor Show as the first car developed by SEAT as an independent company, though it was designed by SEAT in collaboration with well-known firms such as Italdesign, Karmann and Porsche.
From the second generation version onwards, SEAT formed part of the German automotive industry concern VW Group, and all further Ibiza generations, as well as the rest of the SEAT model range, were built on Volkswagen Group platforms, parts and technologies.
The Ibiza spans four generations, among which it has debuted twice (in its second and in its fourth generations) a new platform of the Volkswagen Group. All of them were the top seller model in Seat's range. A re-badge redeveloped version of the first generation Ibiza remains still in production under license in China, by the Nanjing Auto-mobile Group auto maker.
The Ibiza is available in either three or five-door hatchback variants, and between 1993 and 2008, saloon, coupé and estate versions were sold as the Seat Cordoba. In 2010, an estate version, called Ibiza ST, was launched.
The Seat Leon was built and created in October 1998. It was built to be a small hatchback family car. The initial Seat Leon was launched in 1999, and was available as a hatchback, and then the related saloon version was known as the Seat Toledo. It was based on the VW Group A4 platform, which meant that it shared many components in common with other VW models such as the VW Golf MK4, Bora and Audi A3.
The second generation Leon was released in 2005, with factory production commencing in May 2005, which was based on the VW Group A5 platform, which is notably used for the Mark5 Golf. Surprisingly, the second gen Seat takes a remarkable shape similar to the Alfa Romeo models, however it has used the same design style similar to the Seat Altea.
In 2007, SEAT prepared a sole car customized by Shakira. This car was auctioned, and the benefits went to the charity through Pies Descalzos Foundation. Mechanically, it is the same car as the León Cupra.
