Now engineering ships use the word cruiser to show that they are much larger than escorts. They also have abilities that allow you to transfer power to certain areas, I.e. weapons. They are slower than their escort cousins but have eight weapons, four in the front and back. Both the Galaxy and Sovereign classes come under this category.
Science type ships are called science vessels so it isn't hard to spot them. They are the lesser armed of the ships but they gain special bonuses and equipment that their cousins do not have, such as a secondary deflector and a scanning system that highlights weaknesses. For these bonuses there are also weaknesses such as the fact that they are only allowed to use six weapons, which can be a major drawback if you’re used to escorts and cruisers.
Of course there are other types of ships but all of them follow these three rules and classes. However the more that you’re involved in the game, the sooner you'll find that they don’t necessarily mean much if you train to overcome their drawbacks.
Now for the nitty gritty, there are other types of ships from pilot vessels to carriers and everything in between. Each of these has their own set of skills and abilities which could be a great assistance or hindrance to your enemy depending on how you use them.
Carriers are some of the largest ships in the game and they are used to transport smaller fighters into combat, which is handy if you don’t want to enter a battle alone. Like other ships, fighters do have their own classes and can be helpful if you find the best one for your ship.
Pilots are the opposite of carriers as they are built to be as small as possible, they are also without dispute, the fastest standard ship in the game when adding in their afterburner effect into the speed. Afterburners give you a brief boost in speed in any direction which you choose once every few seconds.
Intel ships are the types that attempt to locate weaknesses on the enemy vessels and they then use that information to their advantage. All Intel ships are equipped with a cloaking device (even federation) which means they can be very dangerous in a fight, if left to their own devices.
This is a recent edition and I’ll be honest I haven’t actually flown them yet, but from various friends I have gathered that they can use abilities that affect a ship in specials ways. This can be anything from slowing time around them to stopping it for brief seconds. These types of ships do seem very capable and I do hope to fly them soon.
