I’m going to start with the cover. I really love this cover because of how simple it is. The colours work really well together and they manage to be bright and attention stealing without blinding you or being too flashy. In this social media obsessed generation I think I should also note that this book photographs really well.
When you get inside the book you really have to look at everything. It is not a self-help book so there isn’t an explanation into the different versions and so you really have to turn every page and look at everything on the page in order to make sure that you don’t miss anything. This can be hard to a just to if you are used to skim reading or if you find that short and simple sentence structure makes you read faster. You have to be prepared to pay attention to this book.
This can also be seen in the core of the book, the different versions. There are three different paths and these paths are followed throughout life past the single encounter. However, despite the fact that at the start of each new part it tells you what version you are reading, it does not always follow the pattern of ‘one, two, three’ so you have to be really alert in order to follow and remember each version’s story between it chopping and changing. I wouldn’t say that this ruins the book but it can be difficult to grasp at first and in certain situations of reading.
I feel that sometimes I end up reading the book too fast in order to fully take in some aspects however I feel that this is something to adapt to after reading books so quickly for university.
When you get used to the way in which you need to read this the actual book itself is very charming. It is a book which is very simple but very complicated at the same time. The sentence structure is very simple, as are the individual stories and the characters however on the other hand I felt very educated, if that is the right word, while reading this book. I think that due to the simple nature of the individual stores and the lack of over the top description, I feel that anyone who has a prior love of reading could try this book and fall in love with that educated feeling you get while reading it.
Overall my first impression of this book has been really positive. This is simply a book which I can enjoy reading. It really is very eye opening to see just how extremely different lives can be just based off the difference in one simple encounter.
