Homer Jay Simpson was ‘born’ on 12 May 1955, but due to The Simpsons being fixed around a limited timescale, has the advantage of pushing back the signs of aging. Homer’s age forever remains around his late thirties. In this anti-aging animation he is joined by his family who also never seen to grow any older.
Although having had a variety of jobs in different episodes, including one note-worthy job as lead singer for the Be-Sharps barbershop quartet, Homer’s career path always seems to radiate back to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant.
At the Power Plant Homer is a safety inspector and whilst ‘helping’ to provide Springfield with energy, he conserves his own energy as much as possible by sleeping on duty. That way he can fit in watching eight hours of television in the evening while devouring donuts, or quenching his thirst with Duff beer at Moe’s tavern.
Homer Simpson explains his way of thinking as, “If something’s hard, then it’s not worth doing” and “trying is the first step towards failure.” However, he does occasionally indulge in cunning schemes with son Bart, with whom he enjoys a love-hate relationship.
Homer’s lack of intelligence and of not being the sharpest crayon in the box was originally caused by an experiment. At a young age Homer tried to insert 15 crayons up his nose, causing a crayon to become embedded in his brain, resulting in him becoming the colourful character that his millions of fans love. As Homer has been known to say, “I hope I didn’t brain my damage.”
As well as his many words of wisdom, Homer’s famous catchphrase ‘Doh!’ has also entered the English language. Although in the words of Homer himself, “English? Who needs that? I’m never going to England.”
